In Verizon Messages, on the photo and video tab, can you get rid of the thumbnail strip?
AHA! I searched and found an old post, where double tapping the photo will toggle displaying the preview/thumbnail strip: picture preview panel in message+
On which device are you having issues with? Can you post a screenshot of what you're seeing?
I see now and on my Droid Turbo 2, see the same 'preview/thumbnail strip' of other photos relating to a message thread when looking at one photo. Not sure how/if that can be removed, but, of course, the three dots (upper right) allow you to send/save/delete photo by photo.
