I am getting a notification that Message+ is Syncing Messages - Temporary Background Processing. What does it mean and how do I get it to stop?
ajk13,
Seeing this type of message on your phone is definitely concerning and we can understand wanting to find out why this is happening. When did this first begin? Do you notice any patterns happening around when it appears on your screen? Has there been any new changes to your device?

It probably started about two/three weeks ago. I had not done any updates
or made any changes to my device. Yesterday I updated all my apps in hopes
that would fix it but it did not. I am on Android 8.1.0. There is also not
a pattern as to when it appears that I have noticed.

I just got a brand new Pixel 2 XL, and it has had the same issue from the time that I installed the app.
It's really annoying, because the notification takes up space, can't be dismissed, and I don't really want to disable notifications completely for this app whose entire *point* is to notify you you got a message.
Open Settings > Apps & notifications > App info
Open settings (three dots); Select "Show system"
Select "Android System"
Select "App notifications"
Select "Apps running in background"
Select "Importance"; Select "Low"
Not seeing "apps running in background" there... And if I did, that sounds like it covers a lot of territory... What else would I be losing?
ajk13, we truly understand the importance of making sure unwanted pop ups stop occurring on your device. Allow us to further investigate the details. Can you please let us know if you currently have Verizon messages + synced to multiple device? Also, have you tried to reset the application? If not, please follow this link http://vz.to/2BC0BTR for steps to do so. Please share your results.

Press and hold on the notification. This will give you a few options. I forget what one i clicked on but it brought up the options for the message+ app. Scroll down and turn off background message sync. That did it for me. I have the Pixel2.
This happens frequently on my Pixel2 as well. I can almost always replicate it when I am at one certain location. Message+ also seems to be a primary battery drain on my phone, and I don't text a whole lot throughout the day.
I have Pixel 2XL & just solved the same issue. I'm kinda in a hurry so I don't have time to look at all the others solutions. My apologies if someone already gave this same answer. This is also my first time on this forum (or any forum, really) so I don't know all the ins & outs, etiquette, etc. So please forgive me if I am stepping where I don't belong. I too, was looking for a solution for this issue. I started to follow one of the suggestions & some how managed to end up in just the right place. Here is what I did and it worked for me so far.
Open settings, choose Apps & Notifications. Locate and choose Message+. Locate and open App Notifications. In there you should see Background Message Syncing. Turn it off.
Again, if someone already suggested this, I apologize.
Did this ever get resolved? I just started getting this last week after clearing out some cache from a few apps.
I have an MOTO Z. Android 8.0.0
Thank you! This tip worked.
tried this fix, got all the way to the last part and could not find it like you had problems. so i went
SETTINGS
Apps & notifications
App info
Message+
Force stop
this fixed the problem and it is no longer on my phone
Long press the notification.
Click 'details'
scroll down to 2nd to last option 'background message syncing'
turn that off.
Fixed
I have the same problem. It's been happening for about a week or two. I have a Samsung 9 with all updates.
I had the same problem. I was able to hold down on the message and there is an off and on button. Switch to off. It was gone
Did anyone ever figure out what it's syncing to? It's been on for 2 days. I know I can turn it off thanks to your helpful tips but what is it doing???
naythor, I can certainly understand the confusion that may arise from seeing syncing messages on your Messages+ app. Help is here. As 3Mothers has shared, have you turned off background message syncing? 3Mothers confirms the steps as follows: "Open settings, choose Apps & Notifications. Locate and choose Message+. Locate and open App Notifications. In there you should see Background Message Syncing. Turn it off." This user has confirmed that these steps have resolved her issue with the background syncing prompts. Please try this step, let and us know the results. Looking forward to hearing back.

Not sure if you got this resolved or not but i finally found the easiest way for me...since there is no dismissing it, if uou press and hold the notification it will allow u to change that setting
Same question as SamNote9. I can turn off the notification, but I am more interested in what is causing the synching that lasts so long?
Saying that something is fixed just because you turn it off doesn't mean it is fixed. This is a problem that has show up on my phone since the update to Android 8.0.0 security Patch Aug 1, 2018. The phone (even after rebooting) will go into mode "Syncing Messages-Temporary Background Processing Notification" and never leave this mode other than turning the background syncing off or rebooting - after a reboot it comes back in a short period of time and never goes away
Just because you turn off notifications of a sync in the background doesn't mean you have stopped the sync in the background! The reason it is on in the background in the first place is because you message+ across a few devices. If you don't... As I don't... Here's how I actually turned it off rather than silencing the notification:
Open message+>> click the menu>>settings >>account>> manage devices>>
There are two sections under manage devices. 1 will be primary device... Which should be the phone you are using. 2 should be other connected devices. If you are only using message on your phone there shouldn't be any other connected devices. If there are press disconnect. That will completely disable the sync since there are no other devices to sync with.
I only have a Primary Device, but am still getting syncing happening. And like others, I don't want to turn off notifications - I want to know why it's syncing, what it is syncing to, and how to stop it from happening. I do know that I've been able to interrupt/stop it in progress by doing a Force Stop on the app when I see it, but I don't want it happening at all.
Mine is the same as Wodahseht.
I have a moto z force with Oreo with same nitification for several weeks. Resetting App fixed for a day or so. To fix permanently: press to open the notification on yr list of notifications> you will see a little switch to turn off > turn off > you will see a msg that you will no longer see these notifications
That worked on my Note 9! Thanks!
I'm having the same problem, and also do not have another device listed for it to sync to. Agreed- turning off the notification does not solve the problem, it just stops the notification of the problem. Why is this happening, & what is it trying to sync to?
This problem had started for me about a week ago and I agree with some of the other. I prefer to solve the problem rather than hide it by disabling the notification.
I attempted force close and clear cache but the problem returned the moment I used the app again.
I decided to do some house keeping and delete all failed message attempts from my conversations (the ones with the little warning symol), force close the app, and clear the cache. The problem has not yet returned.
If it does not return this time It would appear that the app is hanging on syncing the failed messages. I hope others can confirm these findings.
New update fixes this, FYI!
Hello there, DROYER26! Thank you for reaching out to us today. We would be glad to help you in any way we can. Can you clarify further, what do you mean by same question as note 9? What exactly are you trying to sync?

I have the latest version and am still getting the syncing happening. So latest update didn't fix for me.
Also, regarding point by SUZUKI7501:
I don't have any failed/unsent message to delete, but I still experience the syncing thing. So I don't think that's all there is to it either (though I guess it's possible failed/unsent might cause it to happen more frequently).
Sorry for any confusion, AZEqualizer. We know it's important to understand what's happening with your phone. What you're seeing on the phone is not a "mode". Android implemented changes to provide notification on your phone of service that are consuming background power on devices. This is why you see the notification since the update. Your phone is functioning as intended. By following Tidbits' steps on page one of this thread, you can learn how to disable the notification in the new Android environment. Does this help to clarify?

Sure. I am not concerned about the stopping the notices. I am concerned why it is synching. An earlier post mentioned that it is synching to additional devices if you have them added. I do not. What is it synching to, and how do I stop if from synching. I know how to stop the notifications.

We don't want this to be an ongoing problem. Have you updated the software for the Messaging+ application?

SamNote9, I'd be happy to help expand on this question. To help me with that, I need a little background information. Are you using Verizon Messages to synch your messages at all with another device (like a tablet)?
In addition to the ability the to synch to another device, VZ Messages are synching with the online backup for your messages. You can then view your messages in My Verizon if something happened with your device. Since it's a background process, the latest Android updates inform you when that occurs. Did I explain that okay?

What do we need to do to turn off message syncing all together?
I apologize for any confusion regarding the Message+ syncing notification, Wodahseht. I understand that you have only one device. Have you ever accessed your text messages online at this link http://spr.ly/6584D4RwA
If you have, then your device is syncing with the online messaging Message+ web app and this is normal.

I had the same thing happening to my phone. Have a Samsung Galaxy s9+. I just went to settings, applications, found message+, forced closed it and opened it back up. The notification disappeared after that.
Sign to your google acct click on manage accounts click on sync and set to off
My phone has done it for days now...finally I turned my phone off and let it restart, and
POOF that message was GONE!

That link didn't work, but I did work out what was causing it on my S9 - backups to Google Drive were turned on. For those interested in being able to turn that on/off in similar situation:
Settings -> Google -> Backup
Allows turning on/off backups for App Data, Call History, Contacts, Device Settings, and SMS text messages. However, can't disable/enable them individually, and turning it off will delete currently saved backup.

Thank you for clarifying,DROYER26. It sounds like you are speaking about Integrated Messages, which allows you to access Messages+ from another device like a tablet. Is this correct? Take a look at our Integrated FAQs page here: http://spr.ly/6588D45b2.

I have the same problem. I dont have my Verizon Message+ set up to sync to any other devices.
Ever since my wife and I allowed the update to android 8.1 about two weeks ago within a few hours of starting our phone the Syncing Messages notification pops up as a "temporary background process".
Problem is #1 my Verizon Messages+ isnt set to sync and #2 it isn't temporary as it states. It stays in the notifications until the phone is rebooted and the. the same thing happens all over again.
It concerns me that it is syncing when I have syncing turned off. And I 100% agree with other in this post... just because you turn off notifications doesnt mean it isnt still syncing and violating privacy and using up battery.
Please solve this problem.
I am using a Samsung Galaxy s9+
CSNYCHARACTER,
We understand this is a frustrating problem for you. We want to find a solution. Let's get a few more pieces of information. Do you sign in to your My Verizon account to back up your messages? Do you have any other backup programs that back up your personal information on your device? Does this issue prevent any other services from working or cause any other issues on the phone?

Isnt it possible for someone to answer this problem straight on? Why are we all suddenly getting this annoying alert? What is it's actual purpose? How do we put an end to seeing this alert? (Meaning how do we FIX, not cover up the problem?

I am running Android Pi on a Pixel 3XL but this should work if you are running Android P. Open settings --> Apps and Notifications --> Message + --> notifications --> uncheck the box for background message syncing.
I am still receiving all notifications but the static notification for the background process is gone!
My phone is doing this as well and i dont care about the notification. I wantvto know where and why messages are being synced. Where else are my sms messages being stored
Had the same notification. Went to the app and force stop. Then open app again and no more notification.
I keep getting this notification as well. I have only been having this problem since I upgraded to the s10+
Sdungee7, it's important to us that you know exactly what's going on with your phone. What messaging app do you use to on your s10+? Are you having any other issues with your device?JesusG_VZW
I tried this. It was already set to low, but I reselected it anyway. Message came back 2 hrs later
I keep getting a messaging+ keeps stopping. How do I fix it so I can text?
Mine keeps doing it too,why?
Hello,
This is how I took care of it ...
Phone Settings
Apps and Notifications
See all apps/Click on Message +
Click on Notifications
Scroll to Background Message Sync
Turn off/Uncheck
Oh my goodness, thank you!!! I've made so many calls to tech support and noone seems to have even heard of this issue despite the fact that there are tons of online inquiries.
My husband and I have noticed this same thing in the past week. Didnt use to happen. No recent phone upgrades or anything.
If your turning off the notification to not see the pop up on your screen. That still does not resolve the problem or answer the question, as to why your messages are being sync. When this should only occur if you are using the Verizon Message+ App to sync your messages across multiple devices. So where is Verizon syncing your messages without your permission...
Thank you! It too bad someone who actually works at Verizon couldn't answer the question. Glad you had a clear answer.
What does sync message?
I'm getting the same message, too.
I am having the same issue. It began right after I texted a robo call asking what it wanted - it texted back a message that I deleted immediately but the syncing issue began almost immediately. Now it sends a notification message emoji that says it's syncing daily - then clears at some point.

I know this is an older thread but I was looking to see how to turn mine off. The other device it said it was connected to just said phone and had a bubble w/ a picture of a message window and then the handheld of a phone. Does this mean that some other phone was connected to mine? it doesn't say which phone. It did show that as of 12/17/18 it was 'connected' to this other device.
