Data Usage

New to the DROID Incredible, as a matter of fact we activated phones yesterday and used half of 150MB in the first hour of activation. Is this right? We checked email and searched for app and ringtones. Neither of us did anything else with the phones. Is it normal to use such a large amount of MBs on activation?

Need advice on MB usage!!

It does not take long to use data. How often is the phone checking for email??? How large of is the phone allowed to download of each email. Did you download any apps??? You say you searched. But even searching will use data.

Did you get on the net??

How often is the weather widget updating???

Also with the phone being new, I am certain many of the per installed apps updated.

Do you have a WiFi connection available at home??? If so I would turn on the WiFi to conserve your 150MB of data.

Webpages eat data pretty fast.

if you went with the 150mb plan then you NEED to turn on the wifi whenever possible. it wont count against your usage. but yes....if you are going to use these daily (internet, downloading apps, email, facebook, and ESPECIALLY if you stream music or video...youtube, pandora, etc), i suspect you will blow through 150mb's during the month.

Thanks! I only downloaded one app and I still cant seem to figure out how I used 70mb of data. I stopped a lot of the automatic downloads and syncs when I activated the phone. I also tried to connect to wifi but the phone cant get the IP address. Still can't figure that out either other than there might be a problem with android and WEP routers. Suggestions on connecting?

not sure? i've never had any issues if i am trying to connect to an open wifi network? and even ones that are protected have not given me problems if i have the correct password. maybe try to connect the next time you are near an open network and see if you have issues.

I still think with the phone coming out of the box, the preinstalled apps updated.

Don't forget that the Droid Incredible has a switch in the settings as well as a handy dandy widget for the home screen to let you turn off and on the mobile network until you want to use it.

Thanks for the info!! The only other question I have is why I am using data when I am on wifi. After several phone calls I got the phone to connect to wifi, and I use it when I am home. I have the 3G connection turned off anytime I am home, yet on my usage I have data used for the time I used an app on the phone. Does using apps use data? How can it when I have wifi turned on and 3G off? I am a bit confused by this!

According to Verizon that is what happened and burned through half the data usage for the month. Reall ynot fair!

Some apps may be designed to utilize ONLY the 3G connection, however, when you are on wifi and toggle the 3G(data) connection to off, that should keep any data from transferring via 3G. I know that on my phone, even if I am on wifi(with data services turned off) and try to update some things, I get a message that a connection can not be completed. As soon as I turn data services back on, I get a connection, although it is via 3G.

you shouldn't be? unless maybe an app that you are using requires gps? then i suppose there is data being transfered? not really sure, but if you are browsing and pulling email, etc..via wifi, then it shouldn't be using part of your allowed data? maybe you should take it in to a store, show them your usage, then do some things (that you are doing at home) through their wifi network, and ask them why the data usage is increasing. i'm no expert in all of the usage, but i thought that wifi didn't count. also, are you sure the 3g is off? you wouldn't recieve phone calls if you have ONLY wifi on at home (ie: airplane mode....you will get NO signal and have to use wifi....that's the only way i know how to make sure you are getting no signal at all).

Are you sure the 3G is completely off? The wifi also has a sleep policy. Go to Wireless and Networks, scroll down to the bottom and verify "Mobile Networks" is checked off. Then go up to "Wifi Settings" and select it. Press Menu and then Advanced. There should be section called "wifi sleep policy" select it and there should be three options: "After 15 min" (default), "Never when plugged in" or "Never".
I personnally make sure the 3G is unchecked and I have set my sleep policy to "Never when plugged in" whenever I'm connected to my home wifi.

The Dinc does not have the 'sleep' option.

Looking at my data usage detail, I only see it at times I know I was not home.
