Previous Note 7 owners - how do we upgrade to the Note 8 without being penalized by Verizon?

I don't understand how this will work. I had the Note 7. LOVED IT. Pre-ordered it in blue. Was forced to exchange it for a black one without battery issues. Then they were ALL recalled and we were forced to get a new phone with a new contract. We stuck with Samsung (got the S7 edge) because Samsung promised they would make it right on the Note 8's with us if we stayed with them. Now I see on my Verizon page it shows I have to fulfill my contract with them that still has 14 months on it, OR pay $495 to pay off my stupid S7 Edge.

In the meantime, Samsung is offering a $425 credit on their Note 8, which would be $24+ month.

If I get this deal through Samsung directly, how will this affect my Verizon bill?

I just spent like 30 min on the phone with Verizon and basically told me that I had to pay off the balance on my Pixel XL. He said that they have nothing in their system that says anything else regarding old note 7 owners. samsung is going to take care of people BUT we are still liable for our lease agreement on the phone that we would be handing over to them. So not only are we going to pay the 24 per month to them but also the monthly fee for the phone that we just handed over to samsung until that agreement is paid off.

I just got off the phone with Verizon as well. He told me I still have to pay off my bill - but if I go to Samsung's website and purchase the phone, it will all show up on my Verizon bill - but that is NOT the case. I just tried it and Samsung said they would pull my credit and bill me directly. I'm SO confused! What a complete mess. I now wish I had just switched to iPhone. Samsung has [Removed] over for the last time. I'll never buy another Samsung product again.

Heres the kicker from Samsung chat......Basically told me that we have to be free of monthly payments BEFORE trading into them for the note 8 promotion from former note 7 customers. Thank you Verizon and Samsung for ramming that metal shaft in our behinds......Way to take care of your customers.

I spoke to Verizon Customer Service this morning and can also confirm that the company has no plan in place for former Note 7 customers.

I have been a loyal VZW customer for more than 10 years. I ordered the Note 7, and sent it back during the second recall. My plan was to continue using my old phone until now, when the Note 8 was available. However, that all backfired when my old galaxy started having issues. I ended up with the Galaxy 7 because I had no other options.

Now I want the Note 8 but I am straddled with the galaxy until it is paid off. I wanted to return the galaxy, receive the credit that is being offered on trade in and pay the difference (approximately $100) in the remaining balance and upgrade to the 8. However, I was told that wasn't an option either. I had to pay 100% of my phone and the discount would be applied to the Note 8.

Frankly, I feel this is VERY short-sighted for the company. They knew there would be people upset that they couldn't get a Note 8. Again, they seem more focused on new customers than they are loyal returning customers.

The Note 7 fiasco is Samsung's fault. However, the rest of what you are talking about (IMHO) is Verizon's fault. They are not honoring Note 7 customers that were left with no choice but to upgrade to a different phone.

Samsung and Verizon should be working together to take care of us previous Note 7 owners. We were forced to give up a phone we loved for a phone we did not want! This is crazy. I've been with Verizon for over 10 years and have had every Note back to the Note 2. I spend a lot of money with Verizon on other phones and devices too. Not a great way to treat a loyal customer! Might be time to go to an iPhone with AT&T.

I do not understand why Verizon can not take the $480 that I would get if my S7E was paid off, and apply that to actually pay off my phone, take my S7E and give me a Note 8 with no discount.

Is that not fair and equal? This sucks. Why are they forcing us to stay with phones we never wanted to begin with and were forced to use our UPgrade and a DOWNgrade! Totally not fair.

Update on this issue. I went to my version store and talked with someone in person. As far this current question about being able to get the note 8 outside of paying our current device balance. They don't think that will change unless corporate is in the middle of getting something worked out that they don't know about. However I was able to upgrade because I had another phone on my account ready to upgrade. He basically transferred that upgrade to my phone line. That other phone now pays the installments of this phone. I get to trade in my pixel and get a trade in credit also. This means I still pay for my replacement phone overall just not all at once. So if you have another that's eligible to upgrade you can transfer that. That's about the only lol hole I think that you can do.

Unfortunately that is only the case if your replacement phone is paid off.

They told me I should be fine keeping the S7Edge because if I had my Note 7 I still would not be eligible for a Note 8....Well DUH!!!!! Guess what Verizon?!?!?! I would also have the NOTE 7 that I upgraded to get, which I don't. Therefore, it is NOT THE SAME THING.

We already knew there is a promotion. That does NOTHING for the people that had to upgrade during the time between the Note 7 and the Note 8 and are now stuck with a device.

Fix the promotion to include those people, taking the $450 off the remaining balance of their phone to allow for an upgrade into the Note 8.

Please VZW, worry more about customer satisfaction and retention than acquisition of new customers.

I was FORCED into ANOTHER phone. I was FORCED to use my UPGRADE on a DOWNGRADE. A phone I DID NOT WANT. It is NOT FAIR to make me stay with that phone when a phone comparable to the phone I was FORCED TO GIVE UP, is FINALLY available!!!!!!! A Note. Which is what I wanted to use my upgrade for in the first place. You are being ridiculous! You are being unfair. You are forcing customers to keep phones they never wanted. Hundreds, thousands, of us. Samsung can't fix your stupid contracts. Only YOU CAN.

This is how you do business:
Take back this phone I never wanted. Give me a Note 8 with NO discount. Keep your $450 or however much the exact amount is for a trade in of a S7 Edge. Apply that $450 to the balance I owe on the phone to end that contract. Or just make my "replacement phone" automatically available for an upgrade. DUH. It is NOT that hard. Get it right. You are treating us unfairly. And Samsungs hands are tied because this is VERIZONS STUPID CONTRACT. Applying the trade in value to the balance works on the same in the end as your current pointless promotion!!!!!!!!! Someone really needs to think this through and work with us here.

Typical corporate answer.

You don't own up or offer a way to actually do stuff for your customers who got stuck with products

they didn't want. I traded my S5 (I was not bound to any contract at this time as my phone had been

paid off and my contract expired) in for a discount on the Note 7. After the Note 7 fiasco your

company told me I could not get my S5 back. I then only had the option to purchase a new phone

from your company and lock myself into a payment plan. Do you see the issue here? Your company did

nothing to assist in putting my situation back to pre-Note 7 fiasco status. Your company saw a

situation to make money and did just that, made money off of customers who were put into situations

out of their control.

I did not have the option to switch to my old phone because my old phone was the Samsung Galaxy S5 and it DIED!! I was without a phone for 2 months before finally getting the note - so going to my old phone was NOT an option. I finally purchased the phone I waited for - and it was RECALLED and I was FORCED to downgrade to another phone I did not want!! I will be switching to iPhone and possibly to AT&T after this ordeal! You lost another long time customer, Verizon! BAD BUSINESS.

Actually, that's not exactly true. When the Note 7 was released, it clearly stated on Samsung, and the Verizon product page, that the Note 7 was Annual Update Compatible. I remember that because I was unfamiliar with the program and had to look it up. It meant that when we had 50% of the phone paid off, we could trade it in for a new phone.

That's all fine and dandy but Verizon is offering a $480 trade-in value from what I saw on their website for specific phones even if you are a non note 7 owner. Also, if you owe on your downgraded phone from a note 7, you are still required to pay it off before you can trade it in which is pretty messed up of Samsung and the cell phone provider because most of use didn't want the down grade but was forced to down grade anyways. Very unhappy Samsung owner and the S7 is the worst phone I have ever owned.

The Note 7 was annual upgrade eligible, but is that the plan your on with the phone you bought in its place?

keep in mind that is a full price upgrade. You get out of further payments as long as you make 12. And pay full price for the Note 8. I suppose its pretty close to a break even.

Also in the same situation here. I had a Note3 'til I finally upgraded to the Note7. OMG, I NEVER wanted to let go of that phone! It was so powerful (especially compared to my little old Note3)!! Then the first recall. Waited in line forever at a local Verizon store, got another Note7. Still loving it. I wasn't worried as my phone never got hot when it was charging, it worked like a dream... I figured all was well. Then comes that second, final recall. My heart sank. I refused to get anything other than a Note as I had grown to love that S-pen like it was another appendage. So, I DOWNGRADED to a Note5. It was still better than my Note3, but nothing compared to how I had loved that Note7. However, I figured it was only temporary as many of us were led to believe until the Note8's popped up. So now I check my account and I have to pay 435 dollars (another 14 months) before I can take advantage of any of the Note8 special offers (through Verizon OR Samsung). That's just not fair. I didn't want to downgrade, I didn't choose to downgrade, I HAD to downgrade. That's a big difference and I agree with what most everyone else is saying... why not apply that discount we would be getting to what we still owe on the phones we HAD to downgrade to and let us have the Note8 at full price?

So for what it is worth, I just want everyone to think about this as it relates the upgrade. If we still had our Note 7's (and gosh to wish I had mine), we would still be under contract for another year on that phone. Yes, we would have had the ability to upgrade but then we would have been turning in our Note 7 and getting ZERO trade-in value and then pay full price for the Note 8. So, it is more or less a break even. For example, my payoff was $462. However, then I get the $480 trade in value and I therefore come out $18 ahead.

Now the real problem with Verizon is that they are [Removed] over because the $480 trade-in value is spread out as a $20 credit for 24 months and it ends when you pay off your phone. So if you were to pay off your phone early, you wouldn't actually get the full trade-in value. So either stick with the Note 8 for 2 years, or Verizon [Removed]

I just talked to Samsung support and if you follow this link: Special offer for former Galaxy Note7 Owners | Samsung US you can validate that you were a Note 7 owner and get $425 trade-in from them. While it is a little less, they apply the full trade-in value at time of purchase and they will also allow you to pay off the phone across 2 years (and you can even throw in accessories to that special financing offer). So in that case, I lose $37, but then at least I could pay what I would pay Verizon if I bought it with no trade-in ($40 per month) and in a year I will basically have it paid off.

Just somethings for everyone to think about. I am probably going to go straight through Samsung because they may not be quite as good, but I truly feel Samsung regrets what happened and wants to fix it but the networks did not do anything to prepare for this and are just doing what they would normally do which sucks. Hope everyone though is as excited to get a Note 8 as I am! I have been struggling to function without a Note in my pocket every day. Good night all!

Alot of problems here.....For one the note 7 had a annual upgrade since it was a "galaxy" device so we would be able to upgrade to the new one. ALSO if you trade in your phone to samsung then you are going to have to have that phone 100% paid off. I owe 400+ on my pixel xl and its has 100% pay off agreement. I cant just trade it to samsung and they give me trade in credit, the phone needs to be paid off. UNLESS if you can trade it in then youre still liable for that payment agreement from verizon on the phone that you will trade into verizon.

As a loyal Verizon customer, I am extremely disappointed in how they are handling the former Note 7 customers who wish to get out of devices they never wanted but were forced in to due to the Note 7 recall.

I called Samsung today for clarification on their offer, and also spoke to Verizon three times today (twice by phone, once via Facebook). What I can't seem to understand is why Verizon would offer a $480 trade-in (which they stipulate will be a bill credit over 24 months) instead of applying that $480 to the remaining device balance of those of us former Note 7 owners who are now seeking to upgrade to a Note 8. To me, that seems like the right thing to do. Penalizing your customers by making them pay to get out of phones they never wanted, all while you profit (from the device payoffs), is horrible customer service. I was told today that the $480 bill credit would make my monthly device payment $24 instead of $40. I'm currently paying $29/month for my device and told the representative I would gladly pay the additional $11/month to not have to come out of pocket $435 to pay off a device I did not upgrade to.

Samsung's offer is $425 instant trade-in, which they are applying to the cost of the phone, thus making our out of pocket expense around $530. We would then have to pay Verizon for whatever remaining device balance we have on our current phone. So anyone who chooses that option would be coming out of pocket near $1K all to get the phone they want.

Some things I was told by Verizon today: You had the option to use your old phone when the Note 7 was recalled. Well, that may be, but seeing as though I traded in my old phone FOR the Note 7, that wasn't an option. I was also reminded of their device policy that states device balances must be paid off in order to upgrade. I fully understand that as well, but the right thing to do would be to forgive those balances (or really, apply their $480 offer as I stated before) of those former Note 7 owners. That is a decision that is fully within Verizon's ability to change. I was also told that if I had the Note 7 and was looking to upgrade to the Note 8, I'd be in the same boat. But the fact of the matter is, most of us who had the Note 7 wouldn't be seeking an upgrade now if we still had that phone. This is only an issue because we couldn't keep the phone we upgraded for, and instead, many of us downgraded and are being charged for an upgrade. HA!

None of this was our (the customer's) fault, and I recognize it wasn't Verizon's either, but the way Verizon is handling this issue with its customers is going to cause you to lose business. Choosing profit over customer service/doing the right thing...well, that's not a good look.

But the annual upgrade program says that once you have paid off 50%, you can upgrade to a new phone as long as you return the phone that you are paying on and buy the new phone at its new full price. So you were not going to get anything other than a new phone. If you use Samsung, you are going to pay $425 less than full price...effectively paying off most of your phone with Verizon and then on top of that they will spread out the cost.

You are not losing much. You pay Verizon what Samsung is giving you as a discount. Under the upgrade program you wouldn't pay anything. They cancel each other out. The scam is the Verizon trade-in offer they are touting.

Now see, I completely agree with CANWAS45. Verizon should, for Note 7 owners, either apply the $480 credit towards the upgrade purchase/device payoff or just erase the payoff amount if choosing the Note 8.

CANWAS45, just as a heads up, Samsung also offers the ability though to finance the $500 you would owe them across 24 months. So while you would still have to pony up the payout amount to Verizon, you could then spread out the $500 across 24 months ($21 per month).

The problem with that is that the majority of us haven't yet reached the 50% mark, and instead of allowing us to pay the difference between that amount and what we've already paid, we're being charged the full payoff amount. It's just not the right way to handle cusomers who got [Removed]...by sticking it to us again.

thats is the issue. When i called they told me the Note was on the Edge Up, but the phone I was forced to get (S7), was not, but should of been. That is what is causing the main issue is that alot of us just downgraded to another galaxy, and most samsung phones are not on the edge up plan. Of course this was never told to us, and if fact I was told that as soon as the Note 7 was fixed, i could just bring in my S7 and replace it...which obviously never happened. They are entirely wrong, and if you bithc at the enough, they will get you on the edge up plan and allow the exchange.

I did read through all of the responses and like others, am not overly happy with the post Note 7 issues, however, I did some research on the Note 8 trying to decide if I wanted to do the upgrade. I find my S7 Edge cumbersome at times; slow, sticky, and was trying to decide if I wanted to upgrade to the Note 8. I am even now in the process of trying to make sure everything is backed up (another issue in and of itself) prior to doing a factory reset in the hopes of speeding things up again and getting rid of some of the quirks that have been occurring.

While most everyone is set on the Note 8, the "upgrades" to the phone are not all that positive but early previews of the note 9 seem more positive with better changes. Given the research I have done, I have made the decision to wait for the Note 9 and bypass the entire "8" series of phones.

Yes, I know that Samsung is doing this, but no I wouldn't have gotten the Note 8 if I had my Note 7.

I still had my Note 3 when I upgraded, which I what a lot of us who has had a Note waited to do, because Samsung got rid of the SD card on the Note 4&5. So, I would have kept my Note 7, until maybe the Note 9 or 10.

I don't get the big deal. You've all been paying $25-$30 or so a month for a phone, which everyone seems willing to do perpetually to have the latest and greatest phone. Financially this is a break even. So why the fuss?

I feel its not asking much to be able to trade the 37 edge in and get the promo trade in value to pay off my current s7 edge. Ill even start fresh paying the full price for the note 8 I don't care. But what I'm not going to do is pay 580 up front and wait 3 or so months for my bill credit for 400 or whatever it is they're offering. I know its not Verizon's fault but they are a multi million company who could easily appease and keep tons of loyal customers by just letting us get out of the contracts on our current phones and get the note 8.

I think the issue is that people don't want to drop the money up front that is needed to pay off the phone in order to get the Note 8 with the discount. It is a pay now in order to get future credit later that is the problem.

While I have made the decision to wait until the Note 9 makes its appearance, I do agree with the complaints. Apply the offered credit to pay off the phone and buy the Note 8 at full cost.

The customer gets what they want and Verizon doesn't lose any money off it.

Yes tk3765, THAT is precisely the issue. Having to come out of pocket $400+ when Verizon is already offering up to $480 for a trade-in is ludicrous. They should just apply that money to the device payoff and everyone would be happy.

Then they can go with Verizon's trade in offer, which is very generous. No carrier should pay for Samsung's mistake or customers choice to upgrade to a $700 phone. People could have gone back to an old phone, or bought a cheap phone to tide them over for 10 months.

That response just shows u have no clue what u are talking about. If u went and replaced ur Note 7 with another galaxy, then there is no trade in offer, unless u somehow paid it fully off in less than a year. Samsung a aren't eligible for the early trade in promos like apples are. So the only choice there is, is to pay off ur replacement phone, and then u can trade it in for the new Note. That is the issue. Would u want to pay $400 for a phone that u were forced to get and at the time, only thought u were using temporarily? I don't think so

I was a customer that went back to an old phone. However, that phone died while I was waiting for the Note 8 release.

Samsung and Verizon said they would make things right with their loyal customers. They haven't.

Also, remember that many customers traded in their phones to get the Note 7 and had no phone to go back to.

There isn't anyone here that is asking either company anything out of line.

Take the $450 trade in and apply it to everyone's remaining balance on the phone they have now so they can trade in to the Note 8. It isn't anything they cannot do and it won't cost the company much more than they are already doing for everyone else. Honor and respect loyal customers.

I went to T-Mobile yesterday and this is what I was told................... They do not allow device payments over $40 per month, so they require a $210 down payment on the Note 8 and then $30 per month.. All in it was going to cost me $299 up front per line to switch to T-Mobile. Yes, they would buy out my contract ($495 owed on current Verizon contract), but I would still have to pay out $598 for 2 lines.

Just had this reply on my post just a little bit ago! Looks like Verizon is hearing you guys and willing to help out! I also was able to upgrade by switching a upgrade eligible phone on my account over to my phone so I could upgrade my phone back to the note. It transfers the current payments for my phone to that other phone so, technically you will stay have to pay for the phone you were given after the note 7 debacle. But, you get to go back to our beloved Note! This option looks to be legit if you get the right representative.

I was the note 7 owner amd I have my s7edge paid off i been on samsung website for 3 days trying to preorder note 8 and you either have to pay balance after they take the 425 off for trade in or go through Samsung finance apparently for what ever reason Samsung finance denied me on financing the balance so now I have to either pay the balance of not get the phone with promotion... sounds like a bunch of [removed] to me

Samsung financing is like every other credit application; they aren't a cell service provider who may overlook credit oopses of someone who has been a customer for a while with no payment issues.

In your case, with the Edge paid off, Verizon is offering a larger reduction in the price of the Note 8 over the 24 month payment period.

Yeah I understand that. When I try and preorder through verizon they are saying my s7edge is only a trade in value of 125$ so instead of getting 425 I'll only be getting 125

Verizon is offering $480 to be credited over the 24 month payment period effectively reducing the cost of the Note 8; it isn't an upfront trade-in credit and is being offered to all Note 8 pre-orders; not just the Note 7 crowd.

This has been my argument for years and have spoken to corporate on several occasions about just that. They continue to cater to the new customers and leave us longtime customers in the cold. I to was a note 7 owner that opted to go with the Moto Z play for this very reason. I knew that they would require us to pay those things off 100% before anything could be done to get a new device. I have been with them for 17 years. If T-Mobile has better coverage where I am would have jetted over to them.

I'm in the same boat here. I got all the options everyone else was offered but Verizon doesn't understand where we are coming from. We all basically wasted our upgrades on a defunct phone and now we pay the price.

I tried switching to T Mobile last week. They agreed to pay off my balance owed on my S7 Edge. All I had to do was pay a 210 down payment on the Note 8 plus the activation fees and I'd be set. I would get to keep the S7 edge and use that until the Note 8 came out. UNFORTUNATELY, Verizon has the S7 locked so it will not work on T Mobiles network. I am seriously considering going in on launch and switching over then especially given the recent news of Verizon throttling of speeds.

Out of curiosity has anyone had any luck contacting any of those corporate execs? I doubt they would help.

I was able to speak to someone in the Executive Offices yesterday and I am very pleased with the outcome.

All I can say is that if you haven't yet sent an email to their Executive Team, I HIGHLY SUGGEST you do so. After I sent that initial email, I got an email response with instructions on how to call in and speak to someone (I posted that a couple of days ago). It did take me leaving two voicemail messages and sending to follow up emails before I got a returned call, but as I started by saying, I am very pleased with the outcome.

I would hope that Verizon would make some changes so that all Note 7 owners wouldn't have to go through this process (and I did express that), but for now, this seems like the best alternative.

I believe the phone should be unlocked if you got it from Verizon. Do you have the developer options turned on? In there it has an option to OEM unlock. I think the problem you may have is that the phone itself is not compatible with T-mobile something in the hardware. Did you check with T-mobile to see if you unlocked the phone if it will work under their network. If you go into settings-about phone- and then tap build number I think 7 or 9 times it will turn your developer mode on.

SO here's my question. Since you know there is a 14 day trial period, why doesn't Verizon hold all traded phones for that time period. That way if I decide against the phone or something happens, I can bring you back your phone and get my old one back!!! NO HARM, NO FOUL!

The thing with this is:

1...$425 off 929.99=$504.99 paid to Samsung, give up current phone which you can continue paying on or pay it off

2....Pay off current phone (approx. $462) and get $480 credit off Verizon's $960 price

VERY LITTLE DIFFERENCE. Still paying full price for phone. Pay off plus discounted cost.

Now my 2cents worth as what I believe it should be!!!

Verizon is offering $480 off with a number of qualifying trade ins and Samsung is offering the Note 8 for $504.99 to previous Note 7 owners, therefore We should get the Note 8 for $24.99 plus of course paying off or continuing current contract.

Verizon is going to trade in all the S7's they get for discounted Note 8 shouldn' they pass that on.

What say you?

I have had conversations with Samsung and Verizon over this and basically the response is the same. They don't feel any sense of obligation to make this right for their customers. All I keep hearing is "if we do it for one, we would have to do it for all" And to that I respond "as you should!" I'm done giving my money to Samsung and Verizon! This is a bigger problem for both when they lose their base.

How is this different from if you had an annual upgrade?

You would have paid half the cost of a phone, but had to return it and pay full price on a new one.

Yes, I do feel this is on Samsung first, but Verizon should be pushing back on them to make this right. They all stand to lose, not just the consumers! If I am forced to stay in a phone I never wanted, I will not trust Samsung or Verizon again. I'm tired of being made to feel that this is my fault not theirs. I paid off my previous phone to get the note 7. I didn't ask them to do that. But then i was told to give it back! Now I'm expected to pay this phone if I want the note again? To me that is a scam and a way for samsung to recoup their losses over their error!!!

I suggest every previous Note 7 owner contact their state's Attorney General's office and ask them to investigate Verizon for fraud (using coercion) for the way Verizon is treating Note 7 customers.

Note 7 customers had every right to expect Verizon to act in good faith when the Note 8 arrived and they are NOT!

At the very least every Note 7 customer should be afforded the same terms with the replacement device agreement that they had in the Note 7 agreement- specifically, a 12 month upgrade. I, for one, was not informed that this part of my agreement was removed with the replacement device.

I was lead to believe that I was signing for a replacement device under the same terms as the Note 7.

I think that with enough customers contacting them they would at least force Verizon to explain themselves.

Note 7 customers were coerced into signing agreements for replacement phones with the understanding that they would be put back into a Note phone as soon as possible WITHOUT being required to pay $500 up front.

The coercion was due to the fact that our previous phone was traded in on the Note 7. We had no choice but to sign an agreement to get ANY phone! We were acting in good faith with the understanding that Verizon would get us back into a Note phone without needing to completely pay for the phone that we were coerced into signing for!

If Verizon would have explained that fact at the time, I would NOT signed the agreement and forced Verizon to give me back my original phone!

It's very suspicious that Verizon's 12 month upgrade program for the phones that replaced the Note 7 was available 30 days earlier but conveniently missing when the replacements took place!

Hi, I had to create an account just to ask you if YOU feel that it's a wise business decision to have customers pay full price for a phone that replaces a defective phone purchased a year ago? Forget the semantics, forget the analogies, just if you feel it would be in the best interests of a company to alienate a fairly large group of consumers.

My wife and I purchased phones when the Note 7 came out. She opted for an S7, while I traded in my Note 4 for a Note 7. We were both happy, and I had planned on upgrading to a Note 9 in the future as we often skip a generation of phones - even though our contracts allowed us to upgrade every year (50%).

My Note 7 was recalled, and I had to wait in line to trade it back in for a Note 7 that had the shiny green "it's SAFE!" battery icon. This was an inconvenience as I have always customized my phones to a very specific way I like them with apps and themes - but eliminating a potential fire hazard took precedence. I had the new Note 7 for less than a month, and Samsung announced a complete recall for the line. We were then told that we could choose a replacement phone without the upgrade fee and would receive a refund for any accessories. Samsung even offered a $100 dollar credit for our inconvenience!

This made me feel valued and appreciated as a customer. I had a lesser phone (picked a matching S7 like the one my wife enjoyed), but at least I knew that Samsung would develop a Note 8 soon enough, and would periodically check tech sites for a potential release date as well as features. I don't enjoy the battery life or size of the S7, but it does what I require as an interim device. Before the Note 8 was to be released, I was satisfied from a business stand-point. I had a working device, and knew that the model I wanted would be released soon.

Where things went awry is that as the release was announced, I went to check if I had paid 50% of my phone's balance so I could choose to upgrade, and noticed that it required me to pay 100% of the balance before I could upgrade. I asked specifically when in the store if I could still upgrade when the Note 8 arrived and had been told "yes, of course". My fault for not reading the new contract closely, but it's also possible that the sales associate wasn't aware either. The Note 7 debacle was a plethora of misinformation and we as customers were being told several different things until it was all said and done. (I didn't even have to turn in my old Note 7 for MONTHS after I received my S7 due to the lack of organization) My wife's phone? She can upgrade RIGHT NOW, no problem. She's happy with her S7 for the time being however, so I'm in the position where I have to justify paying $400 dollars for the balance of a depreciating phone that I want to replace, or try to figure out how to use her contract (I've seen folks do this, but not sure how) to replace my phone for a Note 8.

Now I'm not a very happy or satisfied customer. Samsung is offering a special deal for Note 7 users, which is great - except I would have to nullify any real benefit by paying the up-front cost of my contract. Verizon is offering a similar offer to EVERYONE, except for those that really want to take advantage - they have to pay off their phones due to some clever contract use. The best part of this? The deal expires at the end of September (when many have their phones ready for upgrade in OCTOBER). That largely eliminates the loyal Note customer base as many of us simply either don't have the $400+ or can't justify paying off technology early that depreciates by the day. Why would a company intentionally exclude a group of customers when they don't have to?

Seems like a poor business decision to me.

Verizon knows who had a Note 7, and they should open up upgrades (full-cost financed is fine) for folks already with a poor taste in their mouths from this entire debacle. The traded-in devices will be resold; recouping much of the cost, new accessories can be sold as Note 7 owners likely didn't hold onto their USB-C accessories, and they would maintain a HAPPY client base. Make the GOOD business decision to keep loyal customers happy, and the financial impact will balance itself out. Many people shop with their emotions; it would make logical sense to me for them to give the warm and fuzzy as a $130 billion dollar company that can easily absorb any temporary costs to keep their client base satiated.

So I pre-ordered the note 8 a few weeks ago with my local Verizon store the lady from there just called to explain to me that the only way I can get the phone is to pay 250$ for a bundle package!!!! Are you kidding me! They want me to pay for a screen protector a charger and some other crap i can't even remember what she said. There is no way I am paying 250 with all the mess I done been through with this phone!

Is it a Corporate store or a franchise? The franchise branches do not have to follow Verizon Corporate policies; they make their own "deals" and this sounds like a way to drum up money.

No one should be forced to buy accessories in order to get the phone. Check the item costs individually on places like Amazon or other third party sites and see the actual cost. I'd be interested to see if your store's "bundle" deal cost is inflated.

And you guys are only giving 25% on galaxy s5 and Samsung is giving 50% I don't think that is right. I have been a customer for years and to not be treated. Like that sucks. I was told to go though Samsung to get the 50%. Just to make more problems.

I purchased my Note 8 from Samsung. It was simple, I answered their simple questions and received credit approval instantly with my $425.00 trade in deducted. I have 24 month financing from Samsung Credit. I received my Note 8 on Sept 7. The phone shipped with my free wireless charger and memory card. I am very pleased that I purchased from Samsung and not Verizon.

A couple of questions :smileyhappy:. Was the original phone on a payment plan with Verizon? If so, was there a balance on the phone? Did you add the phone to a Verizon account, as a second line or as the primary line?

Talking to Verizon last week, even if someone went through the Samsung offer, they are still required to pay off the previous phone with Verizon, plus, the phone being paid off has to remain an active line with the associated fees, during the payments or the full amount becomes due on the next bill.
