Mute, not functioning on all apps

When I set my phone to mute / from sound, on the swipe down button, imagine my surprise (and embarrassment) when I continued to get sounds from "Words with Friends". This also makes me wonder, what other things can this or other apps do that I have told the phone not to allow? Audio recordings / Video recordings / access to keystrokes and passwords???!!!!!!!! NOT COOL!

Is it possible that "Set As Priority" is enabled in the notification settings for that app?

I went into notifications, and turned off "allow notifications" and it still made noise.

It wasn't until I dug through the bottom of WWF, that I found the settings to turn off the notifications within the application it's self. ONLY then, would the app be silent. It seemed nothing I changed on the S8 prevented the app from making noises.

As I said before NOT COOL!!! What else can this or other apps do or access regardless of the settings on the Galaxy S8???
