Did anyone else have their SD card wiped with the new update?

This new update pulled (from my SD card), only the last few months of my photos and dumped them into the camera file.

It completely deleted everything from my memory card.
Sure I can move the pics it did keep from the camera back to the SD card (but not from the gallery, because that is completely messed up, I have to do it from "my files"), but what about all the missing pics that the update wiped out?
Why would an update even touch my SD card?

This is why you should always remove the card before doing an update.

really, i've never heard that & have never removed the sd card for any update, security or system, dating back to the droid x.

sd cards don't come with the phone & will fail over time!!

Have you gone to settings-internal storage then go down to explore? There are a lot of different folders in there and at least on my S7 Edge I have seen doubles on the pics that are on my phone. Not on all of them but there are quite a few of them. I never trust these cards I have had to many of them fail. That is why when I have a lot of pics on my phone I always back it up with smart switch. I try and do a backup before I update my phone but there was one time when I picked up the phone and it was in the middle of updating itself.

In general, an update shouldn't touch the contents of the SD Card. But others have reported the same.

I personally follow the advice of jrh4054 and remove the card before performing an update (if you can postpone it).

When you think an SD Card is completely or partially erased, often this is not really the case. If nothing else is written to the card, it's possible to use an external program to recover important content.

energyrae - I apologize for the experience you've endured with the new software update. We definitely don't want you to lose your pictures. Software updates should not delete or move the content of your SD card? Do you use the Verizon Cloud to back up your pictures?

I guess I should have stated that my information was backed up, that isn't what I am taking issue with.

It's the fact that the update wiped the SD card, it shouldn't have touched the SD card. I have never had that happen before.

energyrae, I understand how important it is to protect your memories. I am sorry if the update caused any damage to your memory card. Are you getting any errors on the card now? It has been my experience that once a memory card goes through any kind of corruption, it should be replaced. How are things working now on your phone?

While it doesn't seem necessary to remove the SD card (the update shouldn't be writing or reading from it) - it's probably something to do with other applications running on the device at the time the OTA update starts to take effect.

It's risky for example to just pull a USB memory stick out of a PC. You should attempt to right-click on the drive letter and "Eject" it before removing it with the power on.

Same thing goes for removing a microSD card from a phone while it is powered up. You just should not do it.

The precaution of powering down the device and removing the microSD card before accepting the system update is a good step to reducing the chance something will leave the file system on the card corrupted. So users should postpone the update, power down, remove the card, then power back up and take the update to be safe.
