Looking at purchasing a DROID

I am looking into purchasing a new phone...would like a Smartphone, but not sure which one. It seems that they are pushing the DROID X, that is basically the only phone the rep at the Verizon store showed me.

I use my phone for calling, texting, picture taking, and music. I would like to start using it for email and other things. Which phone would be best for me?

This is really all about personal preferences. There are definitely "Specifications" that are different on every device. You might want to start there just to understand what specs might sway you one way or another. (e.g., Screen size and pixels, Memory, Picture quality, Video, Rear and/or Face fronting Video camera, Slide out keyboard or a "virtual" keyboard, etc.) There are so many things to consider that only you can decide on those. Then there's the actual usability & feel of the phone in your hand.

I would take a look at which features you want most then make a trip to the Verizon store and "test drive" each of the phones that meet your specs.

Personally, I love the DROID X ... As far as "issues"? Not many that I've found other than no Front-facing Video (for SKYPE Video and the bloat-ware that can't be removed). I might also reconsider buying anything right now that does not have 4G support - which the Droid X does not ... Given that, I would probably seriously consider the Bionic or Atrix as my next purchase with 4G coming very soon in my part of the country. But definitely not the iPhone 4 ... If I were to somehow drank THAT kool-aid, I would wait for the iPhone 5 which is supposedly due out mid summer.

go back to the store, look around yourself, play with the phones, see what you like.

Most anyone who answers this question is going to 1) Check out the phones in the store, since no one device will suit everyone. 2) Recommend the device they have because they love it. Or 3) Recommend any device other than the device they have because they have issues with it.

I believe CNET has a question and answer guide to help you narrow down your choice. The first step is to decide what you want, I mean other than what you mentioned. When I looked at renewing my contract I pretty much knew I would be getting the DX, but that didn't stop me from going into the stores oh about 100 times to hold them and compare them. I really like the look and feel of the Fascinate, but it has a 5 MP camera and BING, Google Navigator is not preinstalled on it. Plus I don't really care for Samsung. My niece has the the Incredible and I really liked hers but, I didn't want to go with the smaller size screen.

At the same time my husband was getting a new phone and he wanted a physical keyboard, but now he says that he would prefer my phone since he barely uses the physical keyboard and my screen is much larger.

Another thing to consider is the price you want to spend. Everyone right now is all about the LTE/4G and yes it will be available in more market areas soon, but it isn't right now, so you need to decide do you want to wait for a phone that will have it or get one now. Timing is something that you need to consider also. If you need to have the latest and greatest, if your one of the people that will complain about not being able to upgrade because shortly after you got your phone the next bigger and better phone came out, then you might want to consider waiting. Be forewarned though, there is always the next bigger and better phone coming out!

If your due for your upgrade, don't want to wait and don't mind if your phone is a little behind the times very shortly after purchase, then I would recommend Droid X, larger screen with an 8 MP camera, or the Incredible, although it has a shorter battery life, if you feel that you must have a physical keyboard then I think right now the Droid 2 Global is the way to go.

Of course that is if you have decided Android is what your looking for, I came from Blackberry and I missed a great many things about it when I switched, but if I kept Blackberry there would be a great many things that I would have to do without. Still keep up to date on the next BlackBerry due out.

Another thing you might do is to go into the phone section right here on the VZW site and compare some phones. I will tell you that the Droid X and the Droid 2 are almost alike. The biggest difference is that the D2 has a pull down full keyboard. The HTC Droid Incredible is another good phone which is loaded with features. But we all have our own opinion on what is a great smartphone. As I said, I would decide which features I really want and then compare some of the phones.

When I was near my upgrade time, I went on the VW website. My eyes immediately went to the Droid X. I scoured user reviews and especially CNet reviews. The X was consistently highly rated. I went to several of the local VW stores. I thought about the HTC Incredible and the Samsung line because I felt the Droid X was too big and too "boxy". I did have some issues during the first month with the X, but the more I used it, the more I preferred it. It's a great combination of a "tablet", laptop, and phone.
