Re-purposing my S7 for wifi only does not update OS. Also want to disable registration prompts

I have a Galaxy S7 I have purchased outright from my upgrade to S8. It's setup to use wifi only but I constantly get an error alert to register to Verizon and I cannot update Android OS over wifi.... What's the solution Verizon this should be my phone/tablet and should be able to update it for security and use it how I like no?

Sounds like you left an inactive SIM in the phone. Just remove it.

I routinely perform ota updates on my inactive spare phones(S5, S6, and 2 Moto Z Play Droids) over Wi-Fi. When I turn them on there is one persistent message "No SIM found" in the notification bar. Nothing about registering with Verizon.

You can use the Software Upgrade/Repair Assistant - Repair Assistant - Software Upgrade Assistant (Samsung) | Verizon Wireless

Some devices will not upgrade without a sim. Or you can pop your sim in the device and see if it will take the updates.

These are the only options I'm aware of to update your device.

As a general rule with carrier branded phones, only the pixel and iPhone update without a carrier SIM card.

just register with verizon, they don't care if you're only using wi-fi!!

it won't update the os on wi-fi,

i couldn't update an s5 from 5.0 to 6.0 on wi-fi!!

Gaining access to the latest and greatest software is a must, DELREY. Help is here. Our community members have provided great options as you can register for the My Verizon account via Wi-Fi and attempt the software repair option. Joey2007ua_64 Thanks for this post. I had an old S5 that I still use Wi-Fi only. Couldn't update, etc, and just lived with it. I thought I had pulled the SIM when I deactivated the phone but because of your post I decided to check again. I would have bet money that I removed the SIM. Sure enough the SIM card was still installed. Shutdown, removed the SIM, rebooted, checked for an update, and have now downloaded and installed the most recent update via Wi-Fi. Much appreciated.

if your s5 had 5.0, i'd be interested to see if you updated to 6.0 & if you now have any problems??

Great question, KIJOG. I understand the importance in using your current phone for trade in for the next phone. Help is here. With a trade in, there are two possible ways to get value for it. bearone21 I had already updated to Android 6.0.1 back in 2016 before I purchased my Galaxy S7. Last update had been June 24, 2016. I wound up installing quite a few updates to get to the latest update which was released in December of 2017. The Security Patch level is August 2017 but the kernel is dated December 7, 2017.

To answer your question, however, I will say that at the time I made the transition from Android 5 to 6 on the S5 it was painful due to numerous apps that I had installed that claimed to work with Android 6 and yet really didn't work well. I was infuriated at the time. I dumped the bad apps and my issues went away but at the time I went through quite a period of testing with trial and error locating the problematic apps and I also did numerous factory resets during all of that. On the flipside the move from Android 6 to 7 with the S7 was a cakewalk.
