"Samsung keyboard keeps stopping" since latest update

I use Swype, and since the latest update this morning, the keyboard keeps disappearing and the error "Samsung keyboard keeps stopping" occurs. This seems to happen when I attempt to suppress the Emoji "face" button on the right side of the text field.

I go to settings to change the keyboard back to Swype. This restores the keyboard temporarily, but it happens again when I try to use Emoji. This only started this AM, immediately after the update.

I have the S6 and this problem also. Read through the comments and ended up going to Settings - Language and Input - Virtual Keyboard - Samsung Keyboard - did the Reset settings and that didn't fix it so I chose About Samsung Keyboard and it said there was an update available. I did the update and the Samsung Keyboard is now at version 2.0.02.57 and it says The latest version is already installed. I then tried using an emoji and did not get the pop up. Yay!!!! Try going into your Application Manager and clearing cached data for Swype, in case any data stored is causing a compatibility issue after the update. if that doesn't work, you may want to try clearing data for Swype in App manager as wall.

I had the same error when texting. Box came up that said the app stopped and Iwasn'tt able to type anything ...so I thought I would restart if something weird from the update it would fix on restart.

NO, then I couldn't type in my password on reboot because the keyboard wont launch to type it in. So I cant get into my phone. Since it says you have to type in the password before I can use fingerprint entry I have been locked out of my phone.

Verizon gave me instructions for factory reset... anyone know how I can avoid this and fix the app?

Same problem with my Note 5 using Swift Key.

It only started right after installing the most recent Verizon update for the phone!

No doubt in my mind they are connected.

i tried a factory reset, worked for 2 days, then exact same problem just reappeared.

VERIZON support - PLEASE coordinate with Samsung to correct this issue.

I just solved this by uninstalling all keyboards and then reinstalling Swype and dragon

We are having the same issue. Customer service says the standard thing. Factory reset. We do the reset and a few hours later it pops up again. I did not have an alternative keyboard installed so when I get the message I cannot even log into my phone. A factory reset was the only way to bypass it....still keeps coming back.

Thanks, this worked, but, only temporarily. This morning my keyboard crashed again. However, this method does restore it. It's just not a permanent fix.

My wife and I both have this issue after the last update as well. We both use SwiftKey. It works fine until you press the emoji button and that's when it says the Samsung keyboard has stopped. I hope Verizon will get this resolved.

I have also been having this issue with my Note 5 since the latest update. Although I have Swipe installed, I never use it. I always use Google Handwriting as my 'keyboard'. I also have the Swiftkey keyboard installed - but again never use it. I decided to uninstall the Swiftkey app...and (knock on wood) it SEEMS to have resolved the issue. Samsung keyboard hasn't stopped even one time since. Obviously this isn't a fix, but it might be a workaround ~ at least for those that have Swiftkey installed.

I was able to resolve this issue with my note 5/most recent update by going to Settings, Language and Input, Virtual Keyboard, Samsung Keyboard, then scroll down to the bottom and choosing reset settings, then reset keyboard settings. Now when I choose the emoji icon in a message I don't get that annoying message over and over. So far so good, and I even have the samsung keyboard as the default at this time. Hope it lasts! Hope this helps others!

Same problem here. Clearing the cache didn't work. Changing the keyboard to 3rd party fixes it until I use the emojii button in the default messaging app. I'm working around the issue using Package Disabler Pro to disable the Samsung Keyboard app. The emojii button doesn't work, but at least I don't get the error every 10 seconds. Would be nice if Verizon acknowledged the issue and fixed it.

ANDMOO72, thank you for posting this! I tried many of the suggested fixes, but yours was the one that worked for me. One small modification I had to make was that I had Swype installed, and your fix didn't work at first. But then I disabled Swype, set the virtual keyboard to Samsung Keyboard and then reset the Keyboard like you described, and it fixed the problem. I went to the text app and was able to send emoj's, but of course the Swype keyboard (which I prefer) was gone. I went back into the settings and changed turned Swype back on, set it to default, and presto! problem solved! Thanks again for taking time to post, that was very helpful.

Had same stupid problem. Went to:

Language and input

Default keyboard

Swype

Fixed the keyboard issue immediately. No reset or clearing any data or caches was needed. Haven't tried an emoji yet.

I have the Galaxy S6 and I use Swype. Anytime I clicked the emoji button it would reset my default keyboard app to Samsung, then say it kept closing over and over till I could get in to settings and reset the default to Swype.

I finally fixed it with a combo of the above suggestions. Through settings, language and input, I changed my default keyboard to Samsung, then went into virtual keyboard and reset the settings, then switched my default back to Swype. Now the emojis work again. Thanks all!

I had this same problem!

I was able to type in my password by connecting a USB computer keyboard to my phone with a USB OTG (on the go) adapter.

Once I was in, I followed advice from ANDMOO72 and DCBDBOBSON

I set SwiftKey as my default virtual keyboard. When I use the emoji button in the messenger app, I don't get the error anymore.

DCBDBOBSON is the winner! Updating the Samsung Keyboard fixed this for me. The other tricks worked, but the problem would always return.

The real question is: Why wasn't the keyboard updated with the monthly updates? I didn't even realize it had to be manually updated. I wonder how many users know that?

Yes, ANDMOO72's fix and my modification to that fix worked for some people, and for me it worked for several weeks until I installed the latest Verizon system software update on my phone a few days ago. I had to come back to this thread as I couldn't remember my own steps! Thank you to DCBDBOBSON for his solution, and you for calling it out. I would have missed his post if you hadn't called it out.

So, to make it easier for new readers of this thread, it appears that the "best" solution is to:

HERE'S THE FIX:

1) Go to Setttings, then Language and Input

2) Select Virtual Keyboard

3) Select Samsung Keyboard

4) Scroll all the way down to "About Samsung Keyboard"

5) On the next page, it will tell you if there is an update available. Click on "Update."

I noticed that when I clicked on "Update" it appeared as if nothing was happening. However, the update did install. You can verify this by repeating the procedure. This time, when you click on "About Samsung Keyboard"...instead of "An update is available" it will say "The latest version is already Installed."

Samsung, don't you ever mess with my emojis again!

Thanks for the tip! I was locked out after a reboot and couldn't type a password to unlock. Emergency mode worked great.

Just to pile on I'm having the same issues (I'm using the Galaxy S6). It also seems to happen anytime I try to select an emoji (in text messages or Facebook for example). Annoying to say the least.

I cleared my cache and reset the Samsung keyboard and neither action helped me with my problem. Sometimes I get a keyboard, sometimes I don't, but I definitely can't send emojis.

Please note, from what I can gather, the prior suggestion of updating the Samsung keyboard will fix this issue in all instances. I have not heard otherwise. Please consider this the correct answer for this issue.

I'm having a similar problem on my Samsung J7 V. The Samsung Keyboard no longer works at all for me, and I recieve frequent pop ups saying "Samsung keyboard keeps stopping." These popups make it difficult to use the phone at all.

My solution to get the popups to stop, if not to get Samsung Keyboard working again, is to install two third party keyboard apps (Swiftkey, gboard, swype, google voice typing, etc). When you recieve popups, start typing into a text box using one of the third-party apps. Then, open the notification menu, tap on "select keyboard" and select the second third party keyboard app. The switch back to your main third-party keyboard.

In my case, this stops the popups. It doesn't make Samsung Keyboard work again, but it does allow me to use SwiftKey as my main keyboard app, and reduces the frequency of those annoying "Samsung keyboard keeps stopping" errors.
