Robocall blocking

I am reading on CNET, Fortune and Verizon websites that Verizon will start free spam/robocall blocking this month (March, 2019) based on the Stirred/Shaken cryptography. Will this be automatic or must download or initiate this service somehow? I've had it with spoofed robocalls!

In March, we will be rolling out our free spam alerting and call blocking tools to all of our wireless customers whose smartphones support these features, including iPhone and Android devices. There will be more information on how to sign up for the free service as we get closer to launch.

I know this is a lengthy post, but I promise it’s worth reading.

Like many others posting on the Verizon "community forums", I am receiving several calls a day from a phone number that has the same area code and prefix as my own, but always with different XXXX. last numbers. What are the chances that you know someone from the same prefix? Pretty much zero. Recently robocallers have started to use my last name on the caller ID feature that I pay Verizon for. From my research online Verizon currently offers no "option" or "service or "solutions" to block incoming calls with a specific prefix. Having the ability to block calls would easily solve unwanted spam calls that many Verizon customers are experiencing. Instead of implementing that feature, Version community forum moderators state the only way to stop receiving robocalls is to change your number.

Recently Verizon announced that they would be releasing an app to combat robocalls/spam calls. Offering a free plan with limited features, Verizon decided they would also offer additional "premium" options for an additional monthly fee of $2.99. It should come as no surprise that the "free" plan is less than robust and lacks the options to resolve most issues people are having with spam calls. From further research I cannot find any significant information about this "new" service or “app” from VERIZON all information is from third parties. Since announcement they have only “teased” it’s release and initial offering date.

Customers already pay upwards of $70/month for access to mobile services through the Verizon network. I shouldn't have to pay for Verizon to fix an issue that is well within their power to do so.
I'm self-employed and have a VOIP phone in my home office through a phone service that costs me roughly $15 a month. About a year ago I suddenly started receiving non-stop calls every minute. I contacted my carrier support. Within one minute, I was in contact with a carrier customer service representative. After explain my issue, they knew exactly how to resolve it. They offered to change several service settings (which is pretty advanced and robust) for me. Since then I've received less than 10 robocalls.

As the largest carrier in the United States, there is no reason why Verizon should be charging for an additional service to resolve a widespread issue that is easily within their control to resolve, just as my VOIP carrier did within 5 minutes and for free, all for $15/month.

As a loyal Verizon customer ever since I got my first cellphone my junior year of high school in 2002, I’m starting to question why I should remain a customer of a company that is exploiting a common national issue for their own financial gain.

I have dowloaded Verizon's (free for a week) app called Call Filter and I must say it's not working! I am still receiving many overseas calls a day at all hours of the day. I called Verizon to see if they can block calls from Georgia since the majority of the calls are from there, but they're not able to. Robocalls change one or two #'s so as many as I block per day, they still get through. It seems as though Verizon only allows a certain limited amount of #'s to be blocked on your block list, unlike some other carriers like T-Mobile. I have been a Verizon customer for many years, but they're not doing enough or at least enough to compete with the other carries, to combat Robocalls, so I'm thinking of leaving them.

I often wondered this myself of why the largest carrier in the US cannot let us be more granular about what we the user can block. Its 2019 and there is an epidemic of robo callers and Verizon still hasnt found a way to get rid of the robo callers. So basically what Verizon is saying is that whoever setup robo callers are smarter than their own engineers because they cant figure out how to stop unwanted calls. Chicken before the egg type of scenario. We can offer you great cell coverage but we cant stop robo callers. I bought the Verizon Call Filter and it only works after the fact, i have to go into the app and block it myself, what a waste of time. I can already do this feature with my android, i dont need a stupid 3$ a month app to handle it. Why am i paying 3$ for this app? It should be included in the 70$ a month fee i pay already. Its like they offer this great service but if you dont want to be annoyed then you pay more.

Hey Verizon, maybe its time to communicate to your users about how you plan on fixing this issue, and sending us an email on how this is being done, time line, anything????

since verizon incorporated the new blocking, i haven't had any calls.

I have the Free version and it's not doing the job it should! I get a huge amount of robo calls.

I know how annoying spam calls can be and we want to ensure that you have all the options, jomachine. When it comes to spam and spoofed calls, it depends on how those specific calls are classified. These spammers are always looking for ways to circumvent the system and this is something that is impacting every carrier.
