So it seems that the speakerphone only works when the phone is flipped open, and that there is no single button for # or * on the keyboard & have to use FN-3 and FN-8. Can this really be right?

I'm not aware of a way to use the Speakerphone with the Flip closed... I thought I could do it on the enV3 but apparently you can't on that one either... Sorry I couldn't help more.
Yes the flip must be open to utilize the speakerphone.
This is a problem for me also. It makes the phone unsafe (and illegal in many places) to use while driving so I have to
use the bluetooth for speakerphone.
Too bad I didn't realize this before I bought the phone( or I would not have bought it).
I don't remember reading this in ANY of the reviews on VZ website or anywhere else.
Now It's just not worth the hassle or the $35 "restocking fee" to switch phones!
When I review the phone I'm definitely going to point this out.
I have had an env2 and now a 3 and the speakerphone was only when flipped open. Here in NY we have the hands free law so I have to use an ear piece while driving. You do know that you can get bluetooth speaker phones to use with your cell and it just clips to the sun visor and auto answers and discconects just like a bluetooth ear piece. Mary
This bugs me too..., and Lg or verizon could fix this. The feature that reads you voice mail allows speakerphone operation with the phone closed.
