they said that I could upgrade my phone for free but it said new line required. What does that mean?
If you're not already on one of current unlimited plans, it might be a requirement for you to change your plan to a current one if the terms indicate as such.
A new line requires a new line of service added to the account aka a new phone number to qualify for the promotion.
A line is a line. It means exactly what it says. A new line of service.
