clicking noise

Please be gentle. This is my first posting. I am not a technician at all, but very much fascinated and loving my Droid.

When I unlock my Droid, I hear a slight clicking or cracking metal like noise.

The same takes place when I hit the Power Button. This has been happening for the last 2-3 weeks.

Has anybody experienced the same? I would hate to take my loving Droid to the Verizon Store for an exchange.

As you suggested, I unchecked "Screen Lock Sounds" (do not know why it was check to begin with). Am very happy to tell you that my sound problems are solved.

Take a VERY close look at your power button. It is plastic with a chrome finish, it's possible the chrome is separating from the plastic and causing this noise when you press it. If you apply pressure to the button with the edge of your finger nail and watch it in bright light you should be able to tell if this is the cause.

It's also possible some sand or dirt/dust got between the button and the housing. Try blowing into the cracks while you press the button.

Generally speaking, if the button works normally it's unlikely that VZW would replace it as they'd call it cosmetic issues.

I do not think that the chrome came off the plastic or that there is any sand etc. between the Power Button and the housing. Have the phone in a Silicone cover and gave it good blow-out.

However, after I press the Power Button, I still hear the noise. It sometimes sounds like there is something lose in there.

Also, when (or right after) I slide the padlock to the right to unlock the phone, it make the same sound.

I am using the extended Verizon Battery and the original Battery Cover which fits perfect.

Well, I know exactly what the problem is now. Using the original battery cover with an extended battery applies pressure to the back of the LCD screen. This will eventually cause your LCD screen to fail. The noise you hear is components flexing due to this pressure. Remove the regular door and place the extended door onto the device, hopefully this hasn't caused any damage yet.

If you look at the original battery and the extended battery, you will notice that the extended battery is 1mm thicker. This 1mm is all the difference in today's world of high-tech devices.

I was going to say that it sounds like you have the screen lock sounds enabled, but with the power button making the same sound, I have my doubts.

At any rate, do follow CRB's advice and use the proper battery for with that extended battery. I tried using the original door with my extended battery at first and I never heard any kind of noise like that, although I started using the correct door after I was advised of the ill effects of using the wrong door.

Followed your advice and replaced the original Battery Door with the extended Battery Door immediately.

However, sorry to report that the noise is still the same pertaining to the Power Button and the unlocking of the phone.

I still love my Droid X, but what can be done to remedy this? Will it eventually effect any other functions?

I am still learning as to what my Doid X can do.

Go to "settings/sounds/screen lock sounds" and see if it is checked. If so, un-check it and see if that solves your issue. If not, there's something more serious going on.

I hope for the OP's sake this is the case, however it sounds like it's damage from the extended battery being pressed forward.

Between the capacitive screen and the LCD there is a very small gap, it's about .5mm, when you use the extended battery with the stock door it causes the LCD screen to flex into this area. Usually people only discover the dangers of this after it's caused visible damage to the LCD. However a wide variety of things could go wrong because of this pressure.

If the issue isn't related to a sounds setting, I'd take the phone back to the store and seek repair/replacement. Your phone could live on 4+ years rock solid with this sound. However it could also fail tomorrow because of unseen damage.

Glad to hear it was just a setting and not an issue with the device it's self. Since your phone isn't showing any signs of damage from the door issue, I think it's safe to say you fixed it before any harm was caused.

I'm kinda surprised that you found that to be a problem since I have my screen sounds turned on. But as long as you are happy, that is paramount.

Am glad that this strange sound is gone, and hope that it will stay gone forever.

Only one thing still bothers me that this sound was really strange, like screeching metallic, and like something was lose in there. It was not a pretty sound or a sound you would think you have on this phone.

Anyhow, it is gone thanks to you guys.
