How to Setup Droid X and Exchange 2003

The "instructions" I found on the Verizon "support" site gives about a paragraph telling me how to "setup" the Droid X for Corporate Sync.  It is NOT plug and play!  After setup I get nothing on the Droid X (no email, no contacts, no calendar).  I only get a little message at the top telling me "<account name> account error.," and nothing more.

 

What I need are instructions on what I need to set on the Exchange Server 2003 (I am the system administrator) AND what I need to setup on the Droid X (version 2.2).  Our Exchange Server has been up and running for a few years, servicing IMAP4 users, OWA users, and POP users.  Our mail connection is secure (https://mail.goodnewsjail.org/exchange) and uses an SSL certificate.

 

Can someone please point me to instructions that cover both ends of the connection?  Else the Droids we bought for our folks in the field are once again useless.  Thank you.

The easiest way to get your corporate email to your Droid X is use Touchdown by NitroDesk. I know that you should be able to use the X directly with Exchange through Corporate email accounts, but it is a hit and miss operation, requiring your system administrator for exchange to jump through some hoops to get to it working.

 

Touchdown is a tad expensive as apps go (19.99), but you do get a 30 free trial to see if it works for you. That gives you plenty of time to use it, and see if it will suit your needs. Touchdown also has a 'kill feature' which you can send the phone an SMS message with a certain phrase in the subject line to wipe out your company information that is in Touchdown (emails, tasks, address books etc) so you have the security in case a phone is lost.

 

Touchdown uses the OWA interface that you already have working. It also has an autodetect feature which only requires 4 items of information (url, username, password, and if you need to use the domain as a part of the login), and it will setup the program with no other interaction on the users part. It also has a widget for easy access to unread emails, upcoming appointments, tasks and address book. It also has a push feature to notify the phone when a new item comes in, but your system administrator needs to enable activesync through OWA for that to work.

 

I have used Touchdown for a few months. By far it has been money well spent for me. My company only supports Blackberry for our exchange server, and Touchdown has been a godsend for me to keep up with my work information when I am away from my desk.
