My wife and I previously owned Blackberrys and used Blackberry Messenger quite often. I now own a Droid X, Is there any free IM apps so we can still communicate thru ims.

Use google talk. It's built into android already.
eBuddy is a pretty good app to use.That has all messengers on it. There is also Hi Yahoo or Hi AIM. Those 2 apps only use data and never uses text messages.
