I have tried the upshift to get the numbers, but they won't trigger extensions on the number you are calling.

I think I know what you are talking about...just slide left or right then you can see the numbers again...
If you need to enter an extension while in a call, once you hold the phone away from your face, the keypad will reappear on screen (activated by light sensors). Is that what you're looking for? I don't know if the green alt button works for numbers while in a call.
If for some reason the screen that reappears isn't the keypad, try swiping sideways to see what you get.
