Push To Talk

Hi,

Just reading a bit about a new feature for Verizon Wireless Blackberry devices, Push To Talk (PTT). I originally read about the feature coming soon a couple of weeks ago in another forum, and now I see the download for installing the PTT files on my device. Check it out at VZW Today at wap.mcore.com/vzwwap/app/today/default.aspx? That is the URL for the default Home page for VZW Blackberry devices. It is listed under Get Apps. According to the link, PTT is a feature that has to be activated and costs $5.00/month extra and can only be used with other PTT VZW customers. No dialing, just scroll to a contact's name (or use voice command) and push to talk, as long as they have the service too.

So, what do you think about PTT? Do you think it would be something you might use? Just want to get your feedback.

I would like to try it out and see how much I would use it. I have a feeling it would be very useful to me and a few of my co-workers. I can not for the life of me figure out how to download it and/or enable the server. I have tried the Verizon site, VZW Today and I can not find it anywhere. Am I missing something?

Hi,

It may not be available for download for your device as of yet. The PTT service has not yet begun, but I believe Tour owners can download the software to their devices in preparation of the service. Other devices will soon follow...just keep checking back.

Today Verizon Wireless has introduced PTT(push to talk) on the Blackberry Tour.

Push to Talk on BlackBerry provides instant two-way communication for mobile teams on the go.

Some key benefits include:

Presence (the ability to see who¿s available for a PTT call).

Customers who activate the Push to Talk feature on the BlackBerry Tour before June 30^th, 2010 will receive the Push To Talk service for free!

For New Activations or current BlackBerry Tour users who add the PTT feature:

Any customer who activates the PTT feature on compatible BlackBerry Smartphones during the promotional period will be eligible to receive the PTT service for free ($0 pricing) for the length of their contract as long as they maintain the voice and data requirement and PTT feature on the account.

Requirements:

Free promotional offer only applies to qualified voice and data plans and Nationwide Voice & Email Plans with a voice requirement of $34.99 or higher.
- Exception: Feature can be added to:
  - $9.99 Small Business SharePlan secondary lines with data plan of $29.99 or higher.
  - $9.99 Family SharePlan secondary lines with data plan of $29.99 or higher.
Free promotional offer cannot be added to:
- Flat rate plans; i.e., $11.99 or $14.99, or

This feature is good to try it if its free. In my experience, VZW and AT&T PTT are not even remotely closed to Nextel PTT in terms or reliability. If you want to be reliable and fast then use Nextel PTT and if you want to be just for fun then go for VZW PTT. After playing it with all VZW PTT devices, I can clearly see why the public sector, construction workers, contractors will still use nextel for work.

The promotion is nice... the problem is that not everyone at Verizon knows about it and the system shows the promotion but does not 'apply' it to the account when PTT is added.

I had to call 4 times, on the 4th time, I finally reached someone who knew that PTT had been released for the Tour and that the promotion exists (on a prior calls, they insisted no such promotion existed).

The 4th representative told me that he could see the promotion and confirmed it was free through the end of the contract, but when he added it to my account, it showed the $5 charge. He suggested that I allow the addition of the feature and could call back to get a credit if the system does not automatically apply the promotion. Not sure if I would have to do this every month.

Hopefully Verizon Wireless will get it all organized for future callers and get their systems synchronized or updated so that representatives can add the feature with the promotion with confidence.

If you call and the representative says the promotion does not exist, I would simply call again and talk to a different representative (or wait a few days until the information dissemintates within Verizon).

The Blackberry forums are buzzing about this and folks are still debating whether the promotion exists due to calls to Verizon Wireless resulting in a negative result.

I'm still a loyal Verizon Wireless user :smileywink:

I downloaded the PTT application to my BB Tour, enabled the option in Ptt option, but when I go to connect for PTT it says need to have data, tries to register then becomes disabled....so its not staying connected or registaring. Is this feature actually in service and up and working on smart devices and my device is the problem? Or have I downloaded app correctly and optioned correctly but I dont have the PTT service up and running from Verizon...I'm in Phx,AZ.

I dug up this post from several weeks ago. Just curious if any of you have been trying the Push To Talk (PTT) service from Verizon. If so, how has it been working for you? I just wanted to get your opinions of how it is working for you.

Thanks streetdocrn for the follow up! I got it figured out, verizon had to activate that option on my account before it would take and stay activated on my phone. I have not had the opportunity to try it because I dont have friends with the tour to test with. Also if verizon made the customers aware of the promotion,I'm sure more people would download it and try it, but it seems to be a little hush hush type deal..as was kind of a hassle because the verizon reps were not informed about it and had to do extra research or dig for information somewhere before they were aware..
