Feature phones and multimeadia phone..new catagory

I read somewhere that Verizon will be doing away with the multimeadia catagory of phone and putting then into the Feature phones catagory...and getting rid of the 9.99 data plan. We should be able to buy a good touch phone without having to pay for ANY data plan.

Anyone know if it's true about this upcoming change?

The change is happening. As to what type of phones end up end the feature category remains to be seen.

There have been several added to the feature category recently, some with touch screens, some with qwerty keyboards, cameras are so so. Just keep watching the line up to see what will be added; I'm sure there will be some new additions around holiday time.

Looks like based on this article, the elmination of the MM phone category and the forced $9.99 data plan coincides with the introduction of tiered data plans on 10/28:

A: Verizon Wireless is launching a variety of new Feature Phones throughout the rest of the year. These devices will have text, e-mail, and full multimedia capabilities. While we always encourage our customers to choose a data plan that complements their new phones to avoid unexpected data charges, we also wanted to give our customers the option to choose pay as you go pricing.

Q: What are the new 3G data plan options?

A: Customers may choose from the following 3G Device Data plans:

3G Feature Phones -- $1.99 pay as you go or $15 monthly access for 150 or 150 MB ($15/150 MB overage) or $29.99 for unlimited monthly access.

That's great news! Looks like no more required data plan for non-smartphones!

Just went out the the VZW site and the new plans/phones are out there. What a JOKE!

All VZW did was combine the 3gMM and Feature phone categories. Their two best non-smartphones still REQUIRE a data plan (LG EN-V Touch and Samsung Reality)! But instead of $9.99 requirement it's a $15 requirement.

How in the world can you justify REQUIRING a data plan for a "feature"phone?!
