Are the contact entries saved as a gmail contact, phone contact or other?
To narrow down where they are saved, open the people, press menu, select view. Now uncheck or recheck the selections until you have determined where the contacts are saved.
Try logging into your Gmail account, then going to contacts. If extra contacts appear, try removing the contacts from the Gmail account. Then go to Settings on the device then Accounts and Sync, then choose the Gmail Account, then uncheck and then re-check sync contacts.
