As an account holder, can I get a history of text messages sent by phones on my plan? So far I have only found that a subpoena is needed. I want to know if there is any possible way Verizon would release this information without a court order. Or, would this be considered a violation of privacy even if I am the account holder?

You can view records of when texts were sent/recieved and the numbers from/to online for the last 3 months through MyVerizon. Past that, you will have to call Verizon and request copies of your old detailed bills, I believe they charge a fee to retrieve those records.

The only way to retrieve the CONTENT of text messages is with the court order. This is Verizon's policy, and it even applies to account holders.

Yes, and I have argued the point anytime I call customer service for any reason.

My cell plan, my money pays for plan, my kids don't have money, nor do they work, my social security number, my credit score, my minor children, my choice to add them and if they do something wrong - my lawsuit to deal with for a minor...but keeping tabs and checking in on them - not without a court.

My 14 y/o boy crazy daughter could be talking/texting with a 14, 18, 21, 24 or 40 year old...and of course the kids who make arrangements to sneak and meet the cassanova they have been speaking with tell thier parents everything....no, they lie. But, without a court order, can't make sure kids are safe - even from themselves. They deserve pricacy...because all teens are super smart not to be conned and super honest.

Let them sneak into my liquor cabinet, share with friends and get in trouble, I AM RESPONSIBLE because I made it accessible...so, I guess when the contract is up, my kids are off until they can afford to be responsible for themselves. Then, I will just live with not being able to keep in contact & being the 'meanest, strictest parent they know'.

My kids have no privacy. They have no way to support themselves to eat, have shelter, clothing - if they screw up, parents are responsible to clean up - pay fines, take blame, rehab, insurance, education (and public is NOT FREE - I pay the taxes, and all the $15+ here or there for fees) - but, no way to prevent it...because all teens who are getting themselves into trouble, planning parties to sneak liquor and drive....they are ALL HONEST...

And try to research the numbers they are calling when they log a fake name into thier phone - no recourse because if a cell numer it is private other than location of area code and carrier.

However, Verizon has NO WAY of knowing if you are giving those phones to your kids, the neighborhood kids, other adults...... Which puts them in a position of being sued if the info is released and the other person is not a minor child of the person requesting the info.

How many relationships have the Boyfriend or girlfriend, husband or wife as the account owner. Should they be allowed to see the others messages since one is the account owner?

You are right, they are your kids, you want to protect them in the crazy world we live in. Verizon can help only so much without overstepping privacy laws. Then the kids need to know you as their parent, at ANY time can look at the phones and the texts messages, and they all better be there so you can compare what is there based on the list of text messages on the bill. if messages are missing, they lose the text option.PERIOD. Let them learn responsibility and the consequences when they do not follow the rules.

Another point, looking at text messages alone will not determine if the one they are texting with is 10, 12, 18, 30, 40, or older.

It is a sticky area for a large company in a world where people will sue for the stupidest thing. However someone elses privacy in the wrong hands is not a stupid thing, but a scary problem, that could cost Verizon Billions.

Certain phones allow you to print messages. Otherwise if you have a Droid, there are SMS backup programs or if not, then individual messagescan be sent to email for printing.

But there not any option on the Verizon website to print your messages.
