G1100 Emulator and Bridging Guide (IN-DEV) are now LIVE

Good evening,

After several hours of configuration, the G1100 Emulator + Bridging Guide (IN-DEV) are finally LIVE.

This Interactive Tutorial is intended to teach customers how to bridge a "retired" G1100 into an existing network, such as a LAN created by G3100.

The version loaded in this section is under development. You are welcomed to give any feedbacks, so we can better develop this widget.

Please note that the IP addresses and the MAC addresses used in this emulator are fictitious and reserved for testing purposes only.

Lastly, please do not share this widget outside this section as per CL rules.

Well, we are still coding this emulator.

We will try to push another update before the New Year.

For the IP Address(es) you could either use 256.256.256.x as the octets as under IPv4 Addresses the octets go up to 255 and IPv6 it is hex with colons between OR use 192.0.2.0–192.0.2.255, 198.51.100.0–198.51.100.255 or 203.0.113.0–203.0.113.255 because while they are real but they are reserved for documentation (REF https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reserved_IP_addresses and https://tools.ietf.org/html/rfc5737 )

For the MAC Addresses well, hate to burst anyone's bubble but:

#1 They can be spoofed/cloned. There is no way to know if those MAC Address(es) are the real MAC Addresses or not.

#2 If I was in range of your Wireless Access Point, I could see your Wireless MAC Addresses because it does not matter if you used Wireless Encryption because MAC Addresses are always sent in the clear (WEP and all versions of WPA). Also for SSL - MAC Addresses are always sent in the clear.

#3 and their maybe a third reason that I did not post/think of as of yet...

[EDIT] Just thought of the third reason. MAC Addresses are valid for this subnet only. While I am not able to explain this (at this time), instead someone else either did or showed what I mean by this. See https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p9ScLm9S3B4

Observations on the disclaimer page. It lists these check boxes:

I have disconnected all devices, whether through ethernet, coax, or WiFi, from G1100.
I have disconnected WAN ethernet or coax cable from G1100. The front globe LED should illuminate red.
I have successfully set up another primary router. The primary router has Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) enabled.
I am using a standalone device to access the GUI of G1100 through LAN ethernet or wirelessly.

Nit: "ethernet" should be "Ethernet" (capitalize the leading 'E')

Nit: "WiFi" reads better than "wirelessly" in the last box.

The 1st and last boxes are mutually exclusive. You can't have everything disconnected and have a standalone device connected.

For the last box, are you sure this method works with a WiFi connected client? I've never tried this, so I'm not sure. I prefer to do stuff like this over Ethernet to avoid any issues. If you've validated this works over WiFi, you could leave it as is or add a suggestion to use Ethernet if possible.

Important step missing. You can't just change the LAN IP and Disable the DHCP Server in it, you must make sure that the new LAN IP Address is not only with-in the same subnet as the other router - you must make sure that it is outside of the DHCP Range.

Primary router's LAN IP at 192.168.1.1, the starting IP Address is 192.168.1.100 and the ending IP Address is 192.168.1.200 - then outside of the range would be for ex would be 192.168.1.6

Respond to dslr595148, G1100 Emulator WAN IP address

The emulator's WAN IPv4 is 198.51.100.63 and is within the reserved octets designated by RFC 5737. Furthermore, when the customer satisfies the second technical requirements on the disclaimer page, the Router Status should show Ethernet/Coax disconnected, and IPv4 Address 0.0.0.0. We will amend the emulator's interface to reflect the changes when the router is disconnected from the WAN, hence this ticket may be moot.

Respond to gs0b, Title case Ethernet and change Wirelessly to WiFi on the disclaimer checkbox items.

This suggestion is adopted and will be reflected in the next emulator update.

The idea was to disconnect every thing from the router first, then configure the router by either plugging in an Ethernet cable or doing through WiFi.

WiFi should work since both operate at layer 2.
