Battery has a ? mark on it

My phone has never had any problems until today.  I can't seem to charge it at all anymore.  The battery icon on the top has a question mark on it and I can't get it back to normal.  I've already turned it off and taken the battery out several times.  Does anyone know about this problem?

This usually means that the phone isn't making good contact with the battery. Check to make sure that the battery contacts are clean, and that the battery is seated properly.
