Wi-FI uses?

So I tried turning on Wi-Fi, and successfully connected to my home newtork.

Now what??

What can I do in Wi-Fi that I can't do on th existing and less battery-intensive 3G network. Browing doesn't seem any faster. Should I be using WiFi to hack into my neighbor's computers?

Question: are there specific tasks that are Wi-Fi only, that can't be accomplished by either connecting the phone to my PC via USB for file transfer or using the 3G network.

I'm going to use mine as a hotspot so that I have access with my iPad and my netbook when I am not near another hotspot.

The hotspot use is a different thing; it's a service one pays extra for, and while I agree it's a cool feature, I'm trying to understand the uses of the plain WiFi connection over that of 3G.

For the most part, broadband access over wifi should be faster than your 3G connection. This helps in streaming audio/video through apps like iheartradio or youtube and file downloads will be faster. In my experience it also helps use wifi instead of 3G and produces less heat on the device.

OK so it's a tradeoff of speed of apps .vs. battery life...that's it?

Also, I assume that if WiFi is active the phone will use it instead of 3G for browsing etc., or does something have to be set to force this to happen??
