any advice to convert me to at least kinda like my X? just cannot stand the operating system and functions. ....I cant update til March 2012!!
i need as much advice as possible!!
Thanks!
Seeing that you're new here (1 post), did you just Buy the phone?? If so, it seems like you should just return it, pay the restocking fee, and move on to something else.
Otherwise, maybe more specifics about your hate. We're all here to Help.
I *LOVE* my Droid X !!
More information is always helpful, the Droid X is a incredible device but of course isnt for everyone... If you explain your concerns we can see if we can help but if you already decided its not working for you then I would take Cody21 suggestion to return and pick a device that is more to your liking..

If you can't update until March 2012, I would guess you got the phone around July or August - about six months ago? Still not happy with it after that long? What's the issue(s)? I had a lot of issues with my X when I first got it two months ago, but with the help of the people here on this forum, I love my phone!
Appears I overlooked that part about the update date,,,, My mistake, but I still would say that the I havent regreted buying my device.
I'm just not happy with the operating system at all. My previous phone was a blackberry storm, and i loved the phone. My blackberry malfunctioned the day before the X came out. A verizon salesperson told me to wait and get the X the next day, because it was suppose to be "the new great phone". I purchased the X and haven't been happy since! .. I know verizon gives you a time limit to exchange the phone if you don't like it, but it takes me a while to get used to a device, so i gave it to much time and effort, and still is disstassified. The day after i got the phone, i gently dropped it by accident and the screen cracked. I dropped my storm numerous, harder times with no problems at all, i have even dropped it on concrete. My X was dropped on a cushioned carpet and cracked instantly. This happened in Sept, it is now January and i am still putting up with the cracked screen because i refuse to pay the $90 deductible towards a new phone, which I greatly dislike.
Back to your question about why i dislike the product. I have all of these applications that came with the phone that are impossible to delete, they just sit on my screen and take up space, though that isn't a huge issue to some people, i am a suffer of OCD and it irrates me. As for the system itself, i am extremely disstassified. I feel as if i have to get through may loop holes to get my desired result. The phone isn't complicating to work, but rather a nussiance.
Also, I am a graduate student in college I rely heavily on my college e-mail. The X doesn't not work with my e-mail easily such as Blackberry etc., For me to get my e-mail to work, I have to go to the ITS department at my college and have them put in the correct portal information, which is absolutely uncalled for, nor do i have time for that.

I'm also a former BB Storm user, and the good people on this forum can tell you I posted numerous issues when I first got the Droid X. Thanks to them...I am now very happy with the Droid X!
I'm also slightly OCD but I've never been bothered by the pre-installed apps. Maybe because of all the other apps I've installed, I never notice them. If just the sight of them causes distress, you could try Launcher Pro. That will allow you to hide apps. (Maybe other launcher programs will do the same.)
Regarding the loops to go through, I've found that I had more key presses to accomplish tasks on my BB Storm than I do on the Droid X. Try some customizations...browse the App Market...click on preferences in certain programs. Make it do what you want it to do.
About the email, I do agree that the BB Storm was excellent at email. However, that was about all it did well for me. It was simply a hand-held email device. I work in Health Care, and spend a lot of my day away from my desk going through the entire facility, and I need good email to remain connected. As soon as I realized that I wasn't getting my email instantaneously but within a minute or two (most times), I was okay with that. Even when I do have instant email, I often am not able to check it immediately anyway. Do you have to go to your college's IT department often?? They should be able to set the port info, etc., one time...or at least let you know how to set it yourself if it changes. I was able to set up my work email in only about five minutes - one time - all through my desktop email.
I was meeting with a colleague today, and he recently got an Android phone from Sprint. He came from a BB as well. We talked about 30 mintues about our phones (really geeky...I know). He loves his Android OS phone and doesn't miss his BB.
As a grad student, take a look at what the Droid X can do to help you in your studies. The internet is speedy and easy to use. The storage on the phone is great...you have store a lot of info, papers, etc.
Unfortunately, since you're well beyond your 30-day return period, you would probably need to buy another phone at full cost. And if $90 is too steep for you, $500 or $600 would be impossible.
I was like you a couple months ago. I wanted to get another phone. I thought I had made a bad decision. I had multiple problems and was williing to pay full price for another phone...honestly, I hated this phone after the first few weeks. However, thanks to the people here who patiently answered my questions and tolerated my rantings, I really like this phone now. So, ask questions here...anything you want. There are some great minds here.
I am sorry to say but most of your issues appear to be because of youe limited knownledge of the phone and os because most of the things you reported as a issue could be easily resolved.
I have all of these applications that came with the phone that are impossible to delete, they just sit on my screen and take up space, though that isn't a huge issue to some people, i am a suffer of OCD and it irrates me.
There isnt any apps that is required to stay on your screen all the time, all items can be grabbed and dragged to the recycle bin to remove them of the desktop.
As for the system itself, i am extremely disstassified. I feel as if i have to get through may loop holes to get my desired result. The phone isn't complicating to work, but rather a nussiance.
The menus can be customized and quick launch shortcuts can ve easily added to desktio for quick access so it only takes one click to open a required task.
Configuring most email accounts isnt that complex but some servers restrictions cause additional settings because of the restrictions that the IT and corporation deportment have chose to configure... The only reason Blackberry handles this a little easier is because you do not configure device to connect directly to the corp server but through Blackberrys on dedicated server. You could have configured the email client to send emails through Googles server in the same manner that BB does, if you chose not to do this of your IT department doesnt have knowledge to do this does not totally make it Android fault.
My X was dropped on a cushioned carpet and cracked instantly.
One thing to concider that BB have a plastic based screens compared to the newer devices that use glass, of course glass can be damaged easier that a plastic based screen... I am really suprised that it broke on a carpet when users have crushed there device amd the glass have survived without issues.
This happened in Sept, it is now January and i am still putting up with the cracked screen because i refuse to pay the $90 deductible towards a new phone, which I greatly dislike.
Paying a 90.00 to have a 600.00 device after having physical damage is not unfair because the damage was not caused from manufacture flaw, I have gad me device without a case and haven't had any issue with the glass so much as being scratched.
A Verizon salesperson told me to wait and get the X the next day, because it was suppose to be "the new great phone". I purchased the X and haven't been happy since!
If you was unhappy from day one and you chose not to return the device before the 30 day period how can you see this to be Verizon's or the devices issue?
With all said and done the device isn't the issue but the method you chose to handle your purchase,
If ou have apps on the screen that you don't like remove them from the screen, drag them to the trash.
If you hate to see them in the app drawer you can install launcher pro and hide them.
If you can't get your issues resolved you can always send it to me and I will glady dispose it properly.
Well wildman should we bid him Fairwell "ah" maybee not yet . Lj i too had a black Berry it was a 8330 Curve an i had a lot of time left on our contracts but the towers in area were changing an my BB was'nt doing the job i wanted. an U mentioned the Email ur write in Ur post. Email is Great with the BB's But for me i needed more. I did'nt like the regular Droid i'm not into Sliders so thats why i went with the X an even though i've gotten **** Mad at it from time to time. with these guys Help i too have came around to
like this little Dood. And i have to agree the OS is not for some . But there are many things about the the phone to mention that i as well as the other Guys like about it. Now on the Glass it would i would say Would've had to hit the corner to crack it. because the phone would've had to bend. its Got Gorilla glass in it. but if its bend just right it would probly do that. If your still set on BB i think there is a new BB storm thats coming out but i dont no when. Good luck on wich one u decide to go with but always remember u can come here for help.
I'm just going to put this out there: There is no way possible that a Droid X screen cracked from a short drop onto padded carpeting unless it is CEMENT padded. The Droid X uses Gorilla glass which is shatter and scratch resistant. A simple search of Google can pull up drop tests, even youtube videos of it. In my own experience I've dropped my droid x from a height of approx 5 ft onto concrete. It left a couple little nicks in the aluminum housing but no damage at all to the screen. This was on an occasion that I had taken the snap on case off. With the case on I've dropped it on concrete at least 50 times from waist height with no issues.
Now onto the other issues: Seriously, if you've had this device going on 6 months and haven't got the hang of things, there is nothing anyone can say here that will remedy this.
I have had my Droid X for little over a month and while I don't hate it, it is taking me a while to fully embrace it. I switched from AT&T because of too many dropped calls. I did my research before buying the phone but there are several things I did not know such as the general slugishness of the phone (my iphone was much snappier) and the bugginess ie restarts for no reason, hitting letters on the keyboard and nothing happens, how you have to drill down several levels to do some simple tasks and several other quirks.
As I have asked more questions on this and other forums, the android system is becoming more clear, and it does have unlimited possibilities. The open source OS is a double edged sword some apps are very buggy and don't do what they say but at least I can do what I want with my phone.
I love my DX. I came out of a D2 that was glitchy and slow sometimes. I bought the D2 in August and had 3 replacements through October, I ended up with a DX that I like a lot. It has the same software as the D2 but is optimized a bit differently here, it's not nearly as glitchy or slow as the D2. I find that the DX performs near flawlessly. I only have to reset it infrequently where as I had to reset the D2 once to twice a day. I miss the hardware keyboard but I can honestly type faster on the on screen keyboard on the DX. I found myself liking the phone a lot more than I thought I would. The battery life is surprisingly good too. If I don't surf the web very much I can get 2 days from a charge easily. If I'm on the net a lot I still get a full day. The battery life is way better than the D1 or D2 I had previously. Give the phone a chance, I think you'll like it!
I love/hate my droidx..I am on my 2nd now in under 60 days..card reader went on bad on it and vzw replace but sucked having to resetup..and somehow did not sync all my contacts and I did not notice until I had wiped my broken one to send back :smileysad: just like any new phone it takes a few days to get use to and to become knowledgeable about it!!
I LOVE MY DROID X
I had an lg touch from alltel and went to the Droid X and at first I had not a clue how to use it..I could email and text but couldnt make a call LOL.....I could not find my contacts without scrolling thru them all to find the one i wanted..I was so frustrated ..but was determined I was going to learn to use it. I am 53 yrs old and my daughter talked me into getting it and I was determined to learn...lol..
going on youtube and watching videos on what i needed to know was what helped me..
I have dropped my droid x not once but twice and it did not break or crack the screen..I dont think it was the fact that you had a droid x that the screen cracked so easily I think it was just the way the droid landed (unfortunately)
I truly hope you will go to the messages and pick out what you need to know to use your DroidX and watch the videos because I think you will be very happy with your Droid X once you do...

The biggest obstacle to liking your Droid-X is that cracked screen. Nothing anyone says on this list will make that go away. Every time you look at it or think about it you instantly dislike the phone. Either bite the bullet and get it fixed or get rid of it and get a new one or go back to a Blackberry.

I am sorry but I tried not to say this but I cant hold it any longer, I really believe there isn't more information on how the screen got broke that you choose not to admit to, I have had a number of customers report to me that their pc just started locking up or rebooting for no reason, but after inspecting system error log I usually learn that they did something they should not have done to cause the issue and then when I point out exactly what I found then they will admit it was their fault. I really have a issue to believe that the Droid X fell on a carpet and broke screen, I have seen users drop theirs harder without this happen.
I have had my device from day one and I carry my device in my pocket without so much as a screen protector or case and I haven't noticed even a scratch.
I currently have a Droid X, and I just pre-ordered the iPhone on another line that was available to me.
I have had 6 Droid X's since its launch day of July 15th....yes 6 of them! All of them have been defective (constant resets, constant freezing, not being able to hold a charge, constant data loss problems (meaning from 3G/1X, back to 3G, back to 1X, no data signal at all, etc). There are many glitches with the X.
I will say this.....Android, in general, is much more powerful than the iOS, for example. However, in my opinion, at least, the iOS just works better. And, in all honesty, half of the things that the X is capable of over the iPhone (such as DLNA, etc) I don't care about/would never use. The larger 4.3" screen is nice (at times) and a pain (at times) all in one. It is harder to operate the phone with one hand with the larger screen, but it is much nicer for watching videos, surfing the web, etc. In all honesty, the one thing I am worried about with going back to the iPhone (as I had the iPhone 3GS on AT&T before I came back to Verizon) is the smaller screen.
Maybe Android itself works fine, but with all the "skins" that carriers such as Motorola and HTC (although HTC's Sense UI is much better/stable, in my opinion than what Motorola uses....Motoblur, or whatever they are calling it these days) us, it causes conflict with the Android system.
So....I feel your pain in not liking the Droid X. I really wanted to like it, and have made every effor to like it, but I just can't deal with the bugginess of it anymore. And, as I said, I have gone through 6 of them before giving up. It is a great/powerful device.....no doubt about it.....and I am going to miss alot of things about it, but I won't miss the things it does most (which is reset itself and freeze)
The only phone I had issues with was the Razr, and I loved it anyway. The first one bricked on me out of the blue, the second broke in half while answering a call. The third one, admittedly my fault, was run over by a forklift rolling on solid rubber tires. To the credit of the engineers behind the Razr, it didn't get any thinner, but the screens really didn't handle it too well. The fourth one was great until it stopped charging the battery. That's when I went to a BB curve for a while, wich was very secure and functional, but slow and tedious regarding some of the apps performance/installation.
I got the DX when it was announced that AT&T was going to take over the Alltel services where I live, and I've loved it with no reservations whatsoever.
Ditto. Worst product I have ever purchased. This is my third one. My husband and I even took a class to be sure we weren't doing something wrong. I rue the day that we purchased these boat anchors. Problems are too numerous to spell out.
i hate mine too...
I really like mine.....
A wise man once said, "Don't love anything that can't love you back!"
First off, let me just say that when the phone wants to work, I really like it. The Droid X seems to be a pretty nice device. When it works. I had a couple of BlackBerry phones before switching to the Android. I'm not a total smart phone idiot, but you are entitled to your opinion.
The phones are freezing and constantly shutting down. It may only freeze for 5-10 minutes or it may freeze for 45 minutes. No way to predict. It will even reboot while I am on a call which is extremely frustrating. I have done resets on the phones. I have spent numerous hours on the phone with tech support trying to troubleshoot the phone. I have tried replacing the battery. I have even requested an exorcism to remove the demons from the phone.
Yes, the one constant is me. I understand that. Believe me. I'm extremely frustrated and I have tried to look at every angle. But don't you think eventually I would get lucky and receive a phone that is functional?
For those of you that think I don't really have a Droid X or even a Verizon account, I do. I have been with Verizon for a very long time. Sorry to disappoint.
Please, if you have an honest suggestion, feel free to comment. Any assistence would be greatly appreciated.
What kind of apps do you use? How often do you clear data out of apps that you do use
Have you tried running your phone without your sd card for a day?
How many txt msg/pictures/apps are on the phone, how much memory is in usage?
There are a lot of junk phones out there but the droid x is really solid
@B23 - Have you tried running in SAFE MODE for a day? It will launch only the "stock" APPS allowing you to isolate whether a "BAD" app is causing your issues. Mine is also rock solid. Maybe list the APPS that you're running for us to see if anything sticks out as a possible issue. Not all apps are equal - there are in fact rogue ones out there that can instroduce issues. What kind of WIDGETS do you have running?
I have ran my phone for 2-3 days without installing any apps. Still the same result. I have maybe 35 pictures. Hardly any memory used up. Around 550 contacts. I've tried task cleaners, etc.
My first Droid X lasted about 3 months. It just completely crashed and became a paperweight. I hear nothing but good things about the Droid X. It's reputation is a very reliable phone that has good battery life and such. That's fine. I got a lemon. I accept that. My problem has been the constant lemons from the "refurbished" pile. All I ask of Verizon is let me try a new phone. This "refurbished" crap just don't cut it. I didn't check the files on every phone I have received, but one phone came with preloaded ringtones from a previous owner. I'm trying to make lemonade, but the frustration is getting the best of me.
I'm not familiar on how to run my phone in SAFE MODE. If this is a troubleshooting option, why hasn't tech support walked me through it? Could you please provide instructions on how to run the phone is SAFE MODE? Thanks.
I know I'm a bit late with this post, but when I got my droid, I had the SAME issue. It turned out that I had a bad SD card. Technical support replaced my phone and the issue persisted. For no apparent reason, I decided to format the sd card that came with it and it FAILED! I took my phone to the tech center and the man did not believe me at first until he put the card in his phone and it did the SAME THING. How ironic is that? Try a different SD card. It worked for me. I had no problems with Verizon swapping out the card. It's been fine ever since. If you're trying some off brand sd card, please be aware that you need to pay close attention to the performance of the sd card that you're sticking in your phone. You get what you pay for.
Hope this helps
Thats what i'd like to know also Ann ! Makes me want to scratch my Head Lol As i got mine the Day after the release He must of got it on a special offer U think Lol
Ok, after reading 6 pages, I will try my best to respond to as much as I can remember reading, haha! First, LJ, your screen cracking is your fault. You dropped the phone. Verizon didn't drop it. The DX didn't jump out of your hand to try to commit suicide. You know what the first thing I did when I got this phone? I ordered an Otterbox. That $35 has saved me $90+ numerous times. It's worth spending the little bit of money to protect such an expensive piece of equipment. Do you own a laptop? Do you carry it around with you without a case? If so, I would recommend spending a little extra money to protect your very expensive computer as well. I'm not 100% sure, but people fix broken iphone screens all the time. Couldn't you take it to someone and get the screen replaced? You might not be able to. I don't know. But have you even looked into it?
Next, the preinstalled apps can be easily hid with certain apps called launchers. I'm not sure how much VZW likes the idea of homescreen replacement apps, but they are amazing programs! Launcher Pro is a good one, but I found a really amazing one called Open Home 6. It lets you hide whatever apps you want from the app drawer, and it also lets you make categories like Gingerbread. PLUS, it lets you customize your icons with theme/icon packs you can get from the market. There are thousands of these. This launcher will also let you customize the fonts on your apps and widgets, which is also really cool. I've been nerding out with Open Home for the past few days since I discovered it. I also made folders on my home screen with categories like games, photo, music, wallpaper, most used, and I put apps in each of those folders so I could consolidate every app on to one screen, which is really awesome, because you don't have to fill multiple screens up with icons. I've noticed my phone runs smoother since I've done this.
Next, I will take a minute to SOMEWHAT defend the people who say they have gone through multiple phones and have problems with customer service. I don't know the entire story, so I can't fully defend these people, but I can say that customer service representatives are NOT perfect. I worked in a cell phone call center doing customer service for 2 1/2 years. I know ALL about what goes on inside of a call center. Yes, it was a different company, but it's all the same. I've seen with my own eyes ex-coworkers scream and be VERY rude to people they were talking to on the phone. I've seen CSRs curse at customers. I was a very good CSR. I NEVER raised my voice at a customer. I have a talent for calmly talking to people who are cursing and screaming at me, and diffusing the situation to where they're apologizing to me at the end of the call for being rude and screaming at me. Not everyone has the patience to be a call center rep. The ones who don't, well, they don't last very long. I saw a rep hang up on a customer and get fired immediately.
As far as the defective phones go, before I got my DX, I went through 5 smartphones. I was actually with a local company called Centennial, who got bought out by VZW last year, and around that time lucked out and switched over. I actually went through THREE HTC Wildfires and TWO Motorola Milestones. Granted, those 2 phones are junk to begin with. Hardly any memory, and less than half the processing power as the DX. All 3 Wildfires would constantly freeze and reboot. I took them to the store to show the reps this. They all saw this, and finally, after the 3rd one, I raised enough hell to make them let me upgrade to the Wildfire, which was almost $200 more. The first one, the speaker went out on it. By this time, the sales reps thought I was just making this stuff up and that I was just trying to be a problem customer. I had to make the manager call the phone and listen to the defective speaker. The 2nd phone they gave me had rebooting issues too. My DX reboots on a semi-regular basis, but the day it started with the Milestone, I counted 14 times in a row! By this time, VZW JUST took over Centennial, and they let me transfer over, refunded me the almost $600 I had to pay, and I got the DX. For the people who keep getting refurbished phones, I would tell the dealer that I want a new phone. They have to replace it with a new phone if it's within the initial 30 day period.
Sure, I have problems with this phone. But it's not every day. When i do have problems, I go to forums and ask questions and read. These phones are very complex. LJ, you haven't even SCRATCHED the surface of what your phone can do. No pun intended, hehe. I am learning new things every day. I've done a lot to this phone already, short of doing that R word that VZW forbids. Overall, I can say, even with the problems I've had, I'm happy with my phone. There have been times I've been frustrated to the point of wanting to take my phone to the woods and murdering it with a 12 gauge.
These are phones. They are computerized devices. Nothing you get will be perfect. They will ALL have problems sooner or later. It doesn't matter what you buy, it will eventually break. Whether it's a cell phone, computer, TV, car, etc. And sometimes, you will get a lemon. And every once in a while, you will get a string of lemons. Yes, iphones are pretty stable for the most part, but people still have problems with it. Most of the people I know who have owned iphones have had issues with them. I've seen people with issues with Blackberries, Palms, Razrs, and everything inbetween. Especially when I was a CSR for a cell phone company.
Sorry for the length of that post. I had a lot to say lol. My eyes are crossed from looking at the screen for so long, haha!
Oh, ok. I'm not sure. Good question...
I think what you mean by CPO is actuall a REFURBISHED one. After 14 days (and less than 1 year) of your initial purchase, that's all you'll get if verizon replaces your phone for any reason. They are supposed to give you a NEW one is less than 14 days you have an issue.
Hello ajbrandt,
Thank you for sharing your information! I'm glad your issues is fixed and it was no problem to swap your SD card.
Okay. Here is an update. I FINALLY have a phone that is functional. For those of you keeping track, it is Droid X number 7. After receiving the phone, I did not download any apps for at least 24 hours. Then slowly started adding some of the apps that I needed before heading out of town on business. While out of town, GB came to visit me. Thus far, I like the GB update. However, I do have a new problem. How can I edit my groups in my contacts? Yes, I have a couple of apps that no longer work, but not concerned as those apps get updated to work with GB. But my Groups within my Contacts is important. I need to be able to add/remove within groups on my phone. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
You can't ... on the phone, as far as I can tell.. You have to manage the Groups and Contacts in the Groups via GMAIL on the Internet. (at least not without a 3rd party APP - which I have no idea if there is one.)
