My husband gets texted at night when he's on call for business and needs to be woken by it...the notification sound is rather short and may not wake him. Is there a way to make it play longer or to make it go off again if not answered?

I use Handcent for my text messaging. It is free in the market, if he uses that it allows you to have your notification reccur.
There's also Missed Call from the market. I don't use it, but know a number of people who've been very happy with it.
