Should I update the software in a brand new Droid X

Dear Droid X users,

I will be receiving my upgraded phone, Droid X, tomorrow. I have read over the user forums and understand that battery use was a problem as a result of an update.  I wrote to Motorola to ask if I should plan to update this phone or if it will come with the updates, or just what. I received a reply, but not all my questions were addressed.He said:

"Thanks for reaching out to Motorola. I’ve reviewed your e-mail and I’m ready to help.
With DROID X, and with the rest of our growing portfolio of Android-based devices, we will continue to evolve and improve the overall consumer experience with periodic software updates. The official DROID X software version for Froyo release is 2.3.15."

 

So what is Froyo? And is this the latest software update? Can anyone tell me who has installed this release, if it works properly or if it screwed up your battery usuage, etc.?

They also did not say if I needed to install updates prior to this one or if this includes all updates, up to today's date.

Froyo (aka Android 2.2)  is the latest Android version available on the Droid X.

 

Enter Settings/About phone and look at the System version. It should say something like

 

Version 2.3.340.MB810.Verizon.en.US

 

And below that, under Android version, you should see

 

2.2.1

 

If it says all that, you've the latest system updates. If the numbers are lower than 2.2.1, tap the System updates panel at the top of the About phone screen. Any updates should push to your phone at that point. If not, your phone will tell you it's up to date.

 

I have this version and battery usage is actually very good. I beat the daylights out of my device and it still has a pretty good charge by the end of the day. Just make sure you take a few steps to protect your battery:

 

Lower the screen brightness and shorten the screen off time.

 

Increase or disable automatic update intervals on software that offers it (twitter, facebook, etc.).

 

Turn off any radios you're not using (Bluetooth, WiFi, satellite).
