I get a lot of text messages, some from individuals and some from Twitter. Is it possible to set different notifications for who is texting you? I want to know right away if a friend texts me but I don't need to jump every time I get a new tweet.

Handcent SMS will let you do that, plus a whole lot more. It's free in the Market. I'm sure there are other messaging apps that will do it as well, but Handcent does everything I need a messaging client to do so I haven't tried any of the others.
personally i like to use the app called Ringo Lite. You can set a different ringtone text for each contact.
