I heard Verizion is suppose to the I phone soon. I will have the choice to either get the I phone, or Droid X, do to contract being up. Which is the better phone?
Thanks
Gee, dude, just jump right on in the line of fire with your first post, why dontcha....
You are walking backwards if you think you are going to get a definitive answer on that question.
Because there isn't one.
Both phones are good devices for different reasons. I'm not interested enough to try and break it down further than that.
In here, you'll find that nearly all of us think the Droid X (and the Android OS in general) is a preferable phone for our needs, desires, and lifestyles.
But cruise on into the iPhone section of this site (which should appear any minute now...) and those folks are going to give you a totally different answer.
You will find the same situation when you visit Android fanboy sites vs iPhone fanboy sites.
So when all is said and done, you'll have to read up on all the various comments and stories and decide for yourself. Sorry.
I personally think the Droid X is a better phone. I've had 3 iPhones. Sold each one of them shortly after the purchase.
I've had this same Droid X since July, when they first came out. I'd NEVER consider giving it up, unless I broke it and had to get another Droid X.
There ya go,
Geri O
I agree with Gerio. It's a personal choice. However, I heard that the eye phone is not as easy to personalize as the Droid X, and not as accessible. Whether that is true or not, I have no idea, nor am I interested in finding out. I have both the Droid X and the Droid 2 (disguised as R2D2) and have no desire or interested in looking into the eye phone.
I agree Geri O Cant beat the Ol X an no over coat here x has good signal !
I have really wanted an IPhone but didn't want to wait until it would finally make it to verizon so I bought the Droix X. After buying I found an interesting thing online about the 2 phones So I will share it with ya..
Hope it helps...

PS... Love my Droid !!!!!!!!!!
Ultimately, the question is "Do you want the iphone 4?". The problems/successes of that phone are out there for all to see. I am a dyed in the wool mac user and have wanted an iphone for years for it's compatibility with my other mac products and services, but not enough to drop VZW. That in mind, and knowing the strengths and weaknesses of the current iphone, I personally am willing to wait until June when the "New" iphone is traditionally introduced to see what improvements and compatibility enhancements are made. The current iphone, and the iphone Verizon will initially offer, was designed with AT&T in mind. Let's wait and see what they have up their sleeves with iphone 5 and Verizon as their new bedfellow. As its stands, Droid X is still VZW's top dog.
OK, I had to pipe in here... I just happened to have this discussion with a friend who has been "salivating" about finally being able to ditch AT&T and get an iPhone on VZN's network. The discussion clearly took the turn that iPhone-wanna-bees have drank the Kool-Aid ! There is no arguing with these people. They just have come to believe that there is nothing better than the iPhone for a Smart Phone -- specs & features & usability & customization be damned.
I will tell you my experience though. Whenever I bring out my Droid X around an iPhone friend, they immediately (or very soon) hide their iPhone in their pocket. The Droid X 4.3" screen blows away their iPhone - as far as screen real estate, IMHO. Yes, if you look at the specs & pics on the iPhone, the iPhone clearly has better resolution - but the Droid X is very very nice as well. (If you're buying it as your primary DLSR Camera, you'll likely be disappointed). Then the issue of "NO ADOBE FLASH SUPPORT" on the iPhone just doesn't seem to hit home with them until I bring up a Flash site and ask them to do the same thing - which of course won't work. Then as others here mentioned, all MP3's (and I assume Videos) REQUIRE iTunes to manage music & videos! Talk about a ball and chain. with the DX you have several ways/options to do it - the basic one just to use Drag & Drop to folders on the phone. Then there is the big issue that you have little control over the iPhone as far as anything that Apple doesn't want you to do - but I guess you could say the same thing about the bloat software that Moto Blur introduces which can't be removed! All of my friends with iPhones CONSTANTLY have their iPhone plugged in to charge it. Battery life on smart phones is not great - especially if you surf the web and play music all day on it. The last thing I'll mention is NAVIGATION ! Google NAV is fantastic ... and FREE. I don't think the iPhone has a FREE NAV APP like this. (at least none of my iPhone friends can produce anything that comes close.)
Anyway, I am clearly biased towards the Droid X - I've had it since Sept & love it. It's really been problem free for me - other than my own installing APPs that caused problems. (not all s/w is problem free.)
I read someplace that the iPhone is more of a Smart Phone targeting soccer moms ... The reason (I guess) being that you can't do much to harm it since you can't customize it that much ... unless you Jail Break it - which is a whole other discussion. If you don't want a lot of control and self-configuration of your phone, and everything done for you, the iPhone probably is the better choice. if you want (almost) total control over your phone, the DROID X, IMHO.
Good luck in whichever you decide on.
YMMV
As with anything else in life its all about what you as an individual choose. Some people like Fords some Chevys; some like Nike some Adidas again its about your preferences. This is the same w/phones. I've had my eye on the Droid X since it first debut but, I'd just purchased a BB Storm 2 in November of 2009 and was pleased with it. Well, this past November I did purchase the Droid X and I'm glad I did. I for one haven't been a fan or should I say; I haven't had the desire to purchase an iPhone. I've heard good and bad things about them and for me I think the deal breaker is not being able to watch Adobe Flash especially for videos. Also, the iTunes store I heard can be a bear. Again its about what you think you'd be happy with.
Here is a little post that users prepared to investigated this subject, check this out from http://www.androidcentral.com/so-theres-verizon-iphone-4-eh
If the powers that be can fix the problems I'm having (and most everyone else is) with thier corporate email syncing with the built in app then DROID X hands down..
From what I know about the iPhone, it is pretty much 'user-friendly' right out of the box, but other than adding some apps, there's not much more that can be done to customize it to a user's preferences/desires. However, my experience is limited to friends who have shown me their iPhone...and I wasn't impressed.
The Droid X (and probably Android in general) seems like it can do all the iPhone can do...and more. (I've had the X for almost two months and I still find creative customizations almost every day.)
Coming from Blackberry, I see how these three phones/OS can appeal to certain groups.
1. The BB is for the professional (or those who want to 'appear' professional.)
2. The iPhone seems to be for those who want to appear 'cool' (dare I say, those who want to latest toy to 'one-up' their friends.)
3. Droid X (Android) seems to be for those who balance their work/home life, while adding a bit of 'techie' creativity.
No phone is perfect, and it would be interesting to see how the CDMA iPhone works on Verizon's' network. If you want an iPhone, wait a little while and read the reviews to see if people are as happy with the VW iPhone as they are with it on AT&T.
As for me, there is about a 3% chance that I would ever get the iPhone.
gerio wrote:Also, I had to note...Right after the big announcement, around 11:15am CST, I couldn't access the Verizon data network from my X for about 45 minutes, even after re-booting. It's fine now.Just sayin...))Geri O
I've been having the same problem most of this afternoon. Just re-booted a few minutes ago.
Kooshie wrote:I understand that their is a sterotype for the different os' and I have even seen a comic in regards to it, but I am her to tell you that the blackberry is all the rage in the high school I work in. All the teanagers carry them.
I'm surprised to hear that. I would have thought high schoolers would want a bigger screen and more functionality. Internet browsing on the BB leaves a LOT to be desired, but, I do think the BB has better email and texting capabilities, so maybe that's why those in HS want it.

Interesting times, indeed.
Take care, Loyd,
Cant see iPhone work for me for several reasons, keep in mind this is my opinion and it isn't meant to change users thoughts.
1. Battery Life - iPhone battery is to short and there isnt a way to carry a spare or replace with high capacity.
2. 16 Gigs of storage, I have maxed storage on my device and if I need more I can upgrade instead of stuck at limited space
3. Screen size, after using Droid X I cant see going down.
4. Limited Customizing
5. Restricted to transferring and installing software and data from iTunes
6. Have to install iTunes that forces the user to allow app to be default player on pc.
7. No LTE Support
8. No modification of original design (Antenna Issue probably will still exist)
9. No ability to use multiple connection (Cant access web during phone call)
At this point I do not see why anyone thinks Verizons iPhone will be a superior device.
Besides I see like all devices there will be a number of users complaining about the device because no matter what their is always going to be users that buy the device knowing the history of the AT&T device and expect those bug to be fixed, but from the reviewsthe device is basically the exact device with a CDMA radio for Verizons network.

This is an excellent point that you have made regarding the Droid vs iPhone.
not trying to pick a fight wildman. I enjoy my x somewhat but.... 1. i dont walk around with cell phone batteries in my pocket. have a media dock at home and a charger at work. charging my x through a computer is so slowwwwww.
2. i got my x on release day and have a lot of tunes on it plus a bunch of pics and about 50 apps and i still have almost 15 gbs of space on my mem card and just over 6 gbs available of internal memory so memory is not an issue for me.
3. true. 4.3 inch screen is nice but for some reason the iphone touch screen always highlights exactly what i`m pressing as opposed to the 80 to 90 percent ratio i get out of my x.
4. I`m one of those who has tried my hand at apps like launcger pro and adw and lately go launcher and every time i go back to stock because it seems to lag for me.
5. no argument there but for me personally the itunes app works for its intended purpose. I download torrents of music i have on lp records. I`m dating myself here. Love my vinyl records. All of my torrents install easily and play perfectly.
6. Itunes is the default if you select it to be. It`s a choice given when installing itunes.
7. My x isn`t capable of 4g so its a non issue for me. Kinda happy with the speeds of the 3g to be honest with you.
8.I`m a little puzzled by what you mean original design. are you referring to hardware or software? the antenna issue has been addressed in the verizon version and honestly who really strangles their phones into a death grip trying to intentionally reduce performance? lol
9. Hmmm... never tried to access the web during a phone call. Usually when i get a call i talk to the person on the other end and go back to whatever i may have been doing once it has ended.
I own a x. do i love it? nope. hate it? certainly not. Want an iphone? dont know yet. Haven`t had the opportunity to see what verizons version is capable of yet. Gonna jump the android ship and go to the apple side? Not for awhile if i do. I`m under contract for a little while longer and would at least wait for the iphone 5 coming out in july before i would even consider it. The choice isn`t easy. I do want a phone that once on works as designed instead of always trying to find an app that will achieve that or wait for updates from motorola that i can only hope helps more than hurts the great hardware but o so problematic motoblur.

Another issue I have a is that sometime when I am servicing a system and I may not have internet access because the devices network driver did not load, I can download the driver to my Droid X and then plug into PC usb and install the missing driver.. I can not do this with a iphone because it will not allow you to download anything from the web to the storage and if you was able to you need to install itunes before you can access the information, and this is convenient how? The level of restrictions is to much for me, I can use my device for a number of extra items that I usually have to carry with me but with the iPhone this is unavailable as a option.

Lol
I really don't know much about the iphone so I can't really compare them but I have a Droid X. My husband got it for me in Nov. for my birthday since I had been wanting one since they came out. I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE my Droid X. I have never liked a phone this much. I haven't had any problems with it. It has been an amazing phone and I don't plan on changing to anything else unless this breaks or wears out. I LOVE the large screen and the size of the phone. I know a lot of people think it is to big but I like the fact it's large. When I first got the phone it seemed like it had a short battery life. It would only last about half a day with texting, surfing the web, & talking. Now that I have had it for a while the battery is usually at 60 to 70% at night before going to bed around 11:00. I usually take it off the charger at 6:30 in the morning so the battery life has really improved since first getting the phone. I don't know why it is lasting longer because I still use it the same. Even though I am not having any problem with my battery life I would still like to get the extended battery. I like the fact that adding the extended battery doesn't add a whole lot of bulk like most of the other phones I have had. I love the fact it has a free navigation and I have used it several time and it works GREAT!!! I would like to get the car docking kit for the phone. They have some great accessories for the Droid X. When I got the phone I bought a purple silicone cover and also a packet of 3 screen protectors. They have really protected the phone and keeps it looking brand new and the screen protectors don't effect the touch screen at all. They have some great apps for the phone also. I have installed a flashlight that uses the flash of the camera and it works great. I also have the Facebook app which is pretty good. My email works good and I like browsing the web on the phone also. I really just like everything about this phone!! I went from using a Blackberry 8330 to the Droid X and could never go back to a BB again. I know this isn't a very well written post but it is just a little about my experience with the Droid X. I would recommend the Droid X to anyone but that is just my opinion.

This one baffles me!This is another issue I can not understand because I stream Pandora radio through my device while having device in mobile hotsot mode, cant figure what you could be doing diffrently.5. I'm not sure if you can text while on a phone call or e-mail while on a phone call.... I would guess no since it can't multi-taskYou can text while on call without issues because it uses the cell signal to send text not 3G but you can not send emails,or MMS because they require the web, the email will wait for call to end and then send email.I'm sure there's muck more but I'm still learning this phone. I just got my Droid X two months ago and feel like I've downgraded. Unfortunately I have to suffer w/ this phone for 18 months! If you don't multi-task get the droid. If you expect more from a phone, get an iPhone!!I think you got this backwords, Android can multitask better that iPhone ever could, and how can you expect more with a iphone when the device is the simpliest designed device?

I would guess no since it can't multi-taskYou can text while on call without issues because it uses the cell signal to send text not 3G but you can not send emails,or MMS because they require the web, the email will wait for call to end and then send email.
I'm sure there's muck more but I'm still learning this phone. I just got my Droid X two months ago and feel like I've downgraded. Unfortunately I have to suffer w/ this phone for 18 months! If you don't multi-task get the droid. If you expect more from a phone, get an iPhone!!
I think you got this backwords, Android can multitask better that iPhone ever could, and how can you expect more with a iphone when the device is the simpliest designed device?
To answer the Question on the X i've got both a D inc an Droid X an having the two has been a trip as if there is one thing the
one can't do the other can say for instance the D inc can play all the Shoutcast stations from winamp while the X can only
play a accouple. The X has Gorilla Glass the D inc Doesn't. The thing i like the Most on them is there both candy bar an not
sliders i hate sliders as they have one more thing that can go haywire with sliding mechanism. And if want to expand on my
Memory all i have to do is get a 32GB card an I'm set. And there many other things that my two phones do that the BB that i couldn't even think of Doing. As for the Iphone it may be good for some people an it may be a good Phone but I'll stay with my
Droids as they Do just about every thing that i ask out of them. they dont Cook my Breakfast thoug Uhg I wonder if that can be arranged he he
Man Has Got To Know His Limitations :
I asked this question under a different topic as well, but it may apply here too...

Will I-Phone under Verizon force applications onto users like Droid-X does, or will I have control over my I-Phone like at ATT (where I cannot complete phone calls) ?

I know a lot of people love their Droids but I haven't reached that point yet (I'm far from it!)Here's what I was able to do with my iPhone that I can't do w/ my Droid X:1. You can send e-mail from your mac account and e-mail updates on its own2. You can surf the Web while on a phone call.3. When you have your bluetooth setting on and decide to check something out online you don't have to worry about having your bluetooth setting turned off on you. And if someone calls you can answer your phone w/ your bluetooth while online!4. Ok, this one doesn't apply to the iPhone but you can't share wifi hotspot and go online w/ the Droid. This one baffles me!4. I'm not sure if you can text while on a phone call or e-mail while on a phone call.... I have waited forever for Verizon to get the iPhone (I have an aversion to AT&T) and now my contract is up so I started investigating the two phones for my needs. Had a Droid before and I have been very happy with it.
I did get the Bionic Droid for one really useful reason, the Navigator on my Droid is so much better, it is voice activated with turn by turn directions. I use this all the time and it is just terrific. The iPhone does not have this. You can buy an app for it, but then you pay monthly. The Droid Navigator comes with the phone.
Good luck.
