Blackberry Bold Alt Function

While typing messages that require the Alt key (numbers), I can't hold it down to type more than one number at a time.  I have to press alt, number, alt number, etc.

 

Is there a way to change this or am I missing something here?

Use these shortcuts

 

Alt + Left Shift = Number lock

Alt + Right Shift = Caps Lock
