How do I turn notification sounds back on even after first message is received?

Ever since the first update (Froyo or whatever) I don't get the notification sound unless I click out of the thread window or turn the screen off...Is there a way to turn my notification sounds back on every time I receive a text message even if the screen is still on the thread of the person I am communicating with?

not sure if you can do what you want with the stock features? try an app called "missed call." i have it and use it and love it. you can customize various notifications and their settings better than the stock options. i use it and don't have to exit the thread to get the notification of the new message. but my screen goes dark QUICK so i'm not positive that it works how you'd like, since my screen has already gone dark whenever i get a new message.
