texting to/from an email address?

I'm currently living in the UK to do my master's, and I recently found out that it is possible to text US verizon phones through email (I'm using gmail).

My question is, is there a charge for the people I text when they receive messages and when they reply to them? I don't want to rack up big phone bills for my friends.

The price for the person receiving the text depends on their package. The person receiving the text even if its in a form of a email, will depend on the messaging package they have. If they have a bundle messaging package, it will go against however many messages they can receive. If the person has used all of their messages out of their bundle, the person will be charged for each message recieved after their allowance. If the person doesn't have a messaging bundle it will charge them per message.
