WiFi and the Droid X

I'm going to pick up a Droid X within the next few days and I'm wondering about the WiFi capabilities. Correct me if I'm wrong, but if I'm in an area with public wifi (like a coffee shop), can I use the internet without affecting my data plan? I'm planning on at least initially signing up for the minimum plan, so I want to make sure that I don't incur unexpected charges. Of course, I'll ask Verizon, but it's hard to get a straight answer from them sometimes.

Oh, also if YOU were getting a phone in the next couple days, would you still get the Droid X? If not, what would you get?

As long as your not using their network for internet, you shouldn't uses any of data allowance.

Yes, if you use WIFI you will have no additional data charges from VZW. If you are planning to get the $15 data plan, make sure you monitor your usage as the Droid X, well actually all android devices are DATA hogs.

As for the phones available... I bought my Droid X on July 15th, the release date. I have never been so happy with a phone purchase. Usually the happiness wears off shortly after the 30day return expires. Right now I don't see any device that can yet compete with the Droid X.

CRB79 is absolutely correct. The $15 for 150 mbs of data is not that good of a deal. I tried it, and in about 24 hours is used it up, and most of that was in receiving Email (which is data). I definitely advice the unlimited data for $30, the extra $15 is well worth the hassel-free data retrieval. As for the wi-fi, yes, you will not be tapping into your data using wi-fi.

I've had my Droid X since August and really love it. Recently, I tried the HTC Droid Incredible and returned it. It was a good phone, but not as good as the DX. The only phone that comes close to the DX is another Motorola product, the Droid 2. If you like a real keyboard, then the Droid 2 is the one, but, I must be honest the keys are tiny.
