Physical or ESim - which to use in Europe

My S23 Ultra has a physical Sim (where my data is now), and an Embedded Sim. When I go to Europe which Sim do I need to use and how do I activate the other so I can use my phone as usual for calls, texts, messaging services, GPS and internet? I want people from home and in Europe to be able to contact me without paying for international fees.

Hey, TravellingGal, glad to hear you get to travel to Europe! It sounds like you will just need to add an international travel plan while you are overseas to cover your usage abroad. How long will you be in Europe? Where will you be traveling to?

Mostly Italy and a cruise for a week using MSC ship wifi. Entire trip is one month and short trips to France and Spain will be visited. I will activate the daily global plan on the S23 Ultra just to be safe before I go, but want to try to make use of one of these sims on this new phone to be more cost effficient. My spare phone will be on the $100 30 day plan. I have no idea what to do with the sims. I had single sim phones on my previous trips .

Yes, I always travel with two phones. I am trying to figure out how to utilize the sims for travel in the new S23 Ultra to avoid the $10 daily global charge.

Sounds good, thanks. You can use the $100 monthly plan to cover each destination (aside from the cruise ship) if you are planning on using your phone more frequently. Would that work better for you than TravelPass? Also, when anyone in the US calls your number, they will not be charged extra as they are not calling an international number.

So it seems that having the dual sims does not get me a free pass in Europe. Do you have a recommendation for which sim to keep my US data? It is on the physical sim card.

I use my phone a lot, and for sure will be needing the GPS while walking about without a wifi signal. I was hoping the dual sim would be able to handle this.

Hello, TravellingGal, thanks for your response. When traveling, what we need to consider is adding a global plan to cover your usage. Either the $100 monthly plan or TravelPass.

If you would like to pay local rates, you can use an international SIM while traveling (provided your phone is unlocked). With regard to an eSIM, it is possible to use that as well though one eSIM may not work between multiple destinations.

When using WiFi Calling, any call made to a number outside the US would be charged long distance rates. What you can do in that instance is add a long distance plan to cover international calls. Otherwise, TravelPass or the $100 monthly plan would cover calls to the US and the country you are visiting. Does this help clarify things for you?
