unlocking and transferring phone

I have a verizon plan I inherited from my mom, who passed away last year. My phone is paid off. But she owed $1500 on the plan when she passed away, and I can't pay that off. I have been paying over $400/month to try to pay the bill, and they keep cutting me off when I can't pay more. I want to switch companies. But Consumer cellular said I have to get Verizon to unlock my phone and get a transfer pin from Verizon before they can activate consumer cellular on that phone. So two questions: Is there any hope of getting my phone unlocked, and/or a transfer pin without paying off that previous amount? Does anyone know whether I actually have to have a transfer pin if my phone is unlocked? Thank you.

Hello Maria! My name is Mary. I helped my friend set up this chat, and we were asking on her behalf. She has talked to many representatives from Verizon, and today she was told she has to pay $500 today, and then another 400-something on the 17th if she wants to have cell service. She cannot pay those huge amounts anymore (she has been paying $400 chunks for some time now), and I am recommending she leave Verizon. The phone plan is in her deceased mother's name, and I am encouraging her to let it go and start over. I would really like her to be able to keep her phones, which are paid off. But I also think she should leave and start fresh with another carrier, who is more humane, and be free of this huge burden. If you genuinely think there is something you could do, meaning erase this debt, then we will talk more specifics. Maybe you would even keep her as a customer. But if you cannot erase a substantial amount of a $1500 debt, then I am thinking she should leave. Please let me know your thoughts. Thank you.

I need Verizon to unlock both phones. We are switching for 2 reasoms

to consumer cellular -1. Verizon has become too expensive and -2. The app is the most aggravating app to get info and to use EVER! So I need an unlock/transfer code

Per Verizon's device unlocking policy, the device should automatically unlock once it has been used on Verizon for 60 days.

As for getting a transfer PIN, if you are a postpaid customer, see this link for how:

If you are a prepaid customer, this process does not work and you must go to a Verizon store and ask an employee for a transfer PIN.
