BYOD disconnect question

I ported 5 lines in July last year and got rebates of 500 each in September. My understanding is I can disconnect after an year and so was thinking to do it at the end of July, but Verizon is telling me that 1 year is counted from the date of receiving the rebates and not when I open my lines. Was customer agent correct or I ?
