Message+ Notification Icon Not Remaining

New phone; Moto Z4. Using Message+ app. Able to get notification pop up but it disappears within seconds and there is no notification 'icon' that remains (the one that looks like text in the bubble ... kinda like this ). Notification dot also does not display on the Message+ App icon. Very frustrating to get texts and be unaware of it.

Any suggestions? I have tried every configure, setting, customize I can find.
