Droid 2 gets Gingerbread ?

Just read on engadget that there is an unofficial release of Android Gingerbread available for the Droid 2 (which finally will speed up the phone).
so i followed the link which sent me over to mydroidworld.com where i can download the Firmware.
I read that android is open source but i'm not that kind of guy who likes to root or unlock or whatever.
but in the article it said: "1. Download this file from the TBH app (public release in 72 hrs)". Does that mean that there will be an official update (via settings menu) in 72 hours? i dont get it ...

As of right now no 'official' release of gingerbread has been made by google. With the enxus launching a month ago or so, google decided to showcase nexus on their direct device first. Be careful if you root your phone, it will void your warranty and despite having cool features and no bloatware, many roms are incomplete and cause sevre functionality issues. My roomate has the nebula rom on her epic 4g and it has some severe incompatability issues with some of the launchers and other apps available on the market place.

This is an indication that they are working on it, but this seems to be a leaked version. The "installation" process that they talk about requires you doing some things to your phone that would be in violation of VZW's Terms of Service. If you haven't already done things like that (and you don't want to get into "hacking" your phone) your best bet is to wait.

There hasn't been an official announcement about this that I'm aware of so no definite timeline has been provided, but it is most likely "in the works". There have been discussions from Moto for an update to the D2 for some time to correct some known issues, and quite possibly they were waiting until they were done porting Blur components to gingerbread to actually issue the update.

So I have seen that the Droid 2 Global got Gingerbread, however for Droid 2 owners this is an even greater fustration. When do people who bought the launch device get gingerbread? Are we being left out in the cold for not waiting a couple months to get the global? Have we been made the red headed step children?

I have had multiple conversations with Verizon Tech support. At first I was told that it would be rolled out effective June 15 @ 3pm EDT. When calling them again I was then told that it would be Motorola that would be rollling out the OTA (Over the Air) release. My last conversation with Motorola today I was told that there is a delay with no additional information on the release of the Motorola software upgrade 4.5.600. They told me to keep an eye on their website for any available updates at www.motorola.com/mydroid2global. It is frustrating because Verizonwireless has the upgrade information posted to the website under support for the device with how to do the installation once available and what the improvements are with the upgrade. Hopefully we will not be waiting to much longer!

Just had to comment on this, legendsneverdie. Nebula Rom is an ANCIENT ROM for the Epic 4g, and modern roms such as SyndicateROM and Midnight ROM don't have the kinds of issues that Nebula did.

On-topic, it's garbage that they'd fragment the software upgrades between different versions of an identical phone. For a USA user, the only difference between the Droid 2, Droid R2D2, and Droid 2 Global is the CPU is 20% faster in the D2G. Something like that takes HOURS to program a difference for, not days. Add another day to work in the GSM radio (or the star wars stuff for the R2D2), then test them all simultaneously. Or at least acknowledge "Hey more people have the Global so we did it first but the other two are coming as soon as we can" or SOMETHING...

They are waiting to roll out gingerbread for Droid2 hoping that by that time, we will just buy the newest phone with different technology. Well, I am.....on a different provider and a non-android phone! I love my droid, but not when they treat their customers like crap. Let's face it, why else would they update the newer phones first? SO WE GIVE IN AND BUY THE NEWER PHONES! Me and my 5 lines on my family plan will be switching from verizon and from droid as soon as my contract is up. An Iphone is just as good as just as cheap!

You are correct! Their focus now is on the Iphone. I'm glad they aren't making as much money on the Iphone as they thought. Maybe they will start to try and work with the Adroid customers again. They could care less about the Droid 2. The phone is defective and they won't admit it. On a side note, Netflix all the sudden has no worries about "DRM" and all Adroid phone can get a Netflix app? Am I the only one that thinks that's interesting? Verizon put the stupid unremovable Blockbuster app on your phone and that's how you needed to watch movies. Now they limit data and preinstall the Netflix app on the phone?? Either way Verizon is getting their cut. Am I a little disgruntled? Yes, thanks for leaving me out in the cold Verizon!

Doesn't this problem say "Droid2 gets Gingerbread?"??? This isn't solved! They can lump all the diffrent Droid 2 users together, but not give them the upgrade even around the same time? I thought Verizon was better then this. Verizon is forgetting their base of customers to chase the Iphone rush. I bought an Android phone along with a lot of others because we didn't want to fallow the herd of Apple fan boys. Now they turn on us. Verizon could put Motorola under the bus and we would have this upgrade tomorrow. But, again they could care less and give no info about it.

Yeah, Um... feelin left out in the wind here also!!!! I understand the initial pull for bugs... but scuttlebutt has that it was supposed to come out after D3 release... well D3 is here... where is 2.3???? Heck even custserv has asked if we got update yet to fix this rebooting problem and then realizing yall havent released it yet... I have had VZW for years and even sold/reccomended your phones... dont make me regret it...

My fiance had a Droid 2 since launch, after numerous problems with it I finally called them enough until they gave us an early upgrade which she used to get a Thunderbolt like mine. Bottom line, if you ain't happy with it you have to let them know. They are not going to give you a free phone, but an early upgrade can come in real handy.

Problem is I JUST got mine 2 months ago. I used my early upgrade for it. The prob these phones are having should have been addressed and fixed already. The rebooting is not a hardware issue. It is software related. an OTA Update for that should have been issued quite a while ago. However with them planning the 2.3 update they figured they would fix it with that (im assuming. Problem is (if thats the case) no one is communicating that and they are dragging their feet and being hush about it.

Verzion should be ashamed of the way they have decided to treat the owners of the original Droid 2. That phone is NOT a year old, yet apparently VZW as opted to back its newer line up of phones, rather than support the droid 2. I don't know what world the good people at verzion live in, but in reality, the majority of working class people can not afford to buy a new cell phone every six months, sinply because their VZW stops provid support, and updated software for perfectly good phones. There is no plausible reason as to why the droid 2 did not receive the android 2.3 update months ago, the only reason VZW could have for thisl, is to shotgun droid 2 owners into BUYING another device. CRAP! VZW STOP TRYING SQUEEZE EVERY POSSIBLE CENT YOU CAN OUT OF YOUR CUSTOMERS AND UPDATE THE DROID 2. Just another prime example of VZW true feelings towards their customer base.
