Slow Internet speeds on 5g mobile

While I have good coverage and am in a major metro area, the download/upload speeds I get are very slow relative to what I would expect. Testing is showing 6-8 Mbps Down and 0.06 - 1.5Mbps up. This is surprisingly slow for a major carrier/5G network. I have tested indoors and outside, in the suburbs and in major city areas.

I am in the process of comparing services and Verizon 5G is looking pretty sad. Is there any way to improve this?

A few questions:

-Is your phone a Verizon model, factory OEM unlocked, or carrier unlocked?

-What service plan do you have, and are you postpaid or prepaid?

-Did you use to live in an area which did not have 5G, and are still using the same SIM or eSIM from before?

-Do your data speeds get better very late at night, or very early in the morning when most people are asleep?

Sorry i can’t provide much info but what i can tell you is my internet gets a bit more consistent in the night time. daytime online gaming or ever streaming movies is unbearable

If your data speeds improve at night, then the daytime problem is at least partially due to network congestion (too much traffic on the towers). There isn't much that can be done about congestion short of Verizon building more towers, which would also cause them to bring in more price hikes, so it's a fine line to walk.

If your service plan is something other than Unlimited Ultimate or Unlimited Plus, you are also subject to deprioritization on the towers. This causes your data speeds to be slower than the people on the top plans. In a large city with a lot of devices always connected to the towers, deprioritization occurs constantly at least in my experience. Also, it's only the customers on the top 2 plans who are able to access 5G UW, which is where the speed is. If you get the "regular" 5G, it's low-band 5G, which actually doesn't go much faster than 4G LTE assuming LTE isn't congested. The only advantage low-band 5G has over the older LTE technology is that 5G technology can handle more devices at one time.
