Does Sim Swapping effect phone plans

So I was thinking of upgrading my iphone 7 plus to maybe a iphone 13 or 15.

currently I’m on my father phone plan and he’s not interested in upgrading or changing his current plan (probably because it will end up costing him more money).

I still want to upgrade but I don’t want to accidentally change anything related to his plan, so I’m trying to figure out what are my options.

can I just take the sim card out of my phone and put it into a iphone 13?

Does that effect anything on his end?

Can i just put my old sim card into a newer iphone myself or do I have to bring it to version? (In which case i would also need his permission and for him to be there since he's the account holder)

His phone plan is pretty old, the newest iphone he has is i think an iphone 11. So I'm not sure if i just put my sim card into a newer iphone if it will effect anything or not.

I was wondering if anyone in the community could clarify how sim swapping works.
