Swapping existing phone/number with new line device

I am looking to add a new line for my son on my existing plan and take advantage of a promo credit that will pay all but 10 dollars of this new device payment per month.

My question is, I would like to switch my phone number to the newly added line and give my son my existing phone as is he only 10 and does not need an iphone 16. If I have a monthly promo credit on my current phone (iphone 14) and receive a new promo credit for the iphone 16, do those credits stay in effect on our bill and all that is changing are the phone numbers associated with the devices?

Happy Thursday! Being on top of your account is crucial, especially if you are managing an offer.

Keep in mind the promotional credits will stay with the line that took advantage of the deal (if a new offer is taken, the new credits take over, in other words the old offer gets removed). However, each promo has its own restrictions, terms and conditions. If you do not mind us asking, which offer are you seeking?

I am looking to add a line and get the iPhone 16 pro Max and I currently have an iPhone 14 Pro Max that is 50% paid off and has a promotional monthly credit. I would like to switch phone numbers between the new line and the existing line but want to make sure the overall bill does not change.

Thanks for sharing those details, klbhad05. This is certainly something you can do, the agreements would just appear on the wrong lines. Essentially, you'll add the new line and new agreement, but activate the new phone on your existing line of service. Then you can activate your iPhone 14 Pro Max on the new line of service. Old phone will have the new number, and new phone will have your current number. Does this help answer your question? Did you need help in placing the order for the new line of service?

I was told by a chat agent that I had to activate the new line on the new phone and then I could go through the number swapping process.

From what I've read elsewhere in the forums, if the promo is for a NEW line, then trying to put your current number onto the new phone will cause you to lose out on BOTH the credits you are receiving on the old phone - because you would be leaving a contract associated with the old phone, AND invalidate the new contract, because the new contract says it must be a new line, not a number already with Verizon. Any contracts these days are tied to some device(s) and the phone number assigned to those device(s) at the beginning of the deal. If you change anything, such as switching out the device(s), changing the service plan associated with the deal, or disconnect service/port out, it is considered breaking the contract so then you lose any promotional credits.

If you'd like to upgrade your iPhone 14 to the iPhone 16, a better suggestion would be to ask if there is a buyout clause in your existing contract, where you pay off the remaining balance of the iPhone 14 in exchange for losing the remaining device credits, and afterwards, get a new contract started with the iPhone 16 where there is a new credit being applied monthly. Some people say they've gotten offers about 18 months in on a contract to upgrade in such a manner - it's essentially getting a phone for half price if you buy out the contract at that point and start a new one with a new phone.
