My recently switched to Verison landlines rings when a visitor pushes the security buzzer downstairs. They can hear me but I can't hear them, and when I push '9' to let them in nothing happens. Same old phone as before, same phone number. Don't have a 'send' button on phone.

The ability to unlatch and intercom a door requires some sort of external controller that is connected to the telephone line.

If you have a contractor who maintains the door equipment, my suggestion is to reach out to them to have the system checked and any issues corrected.
