getting gibberish instead of readable text messages

When the sender (using a Samsung Intensity, which is terrible, by the way) send a text to my Iphone, it becomes gibberish symbols. If I respond back, the next incoming message is fine. Why would this happen? Thanks.

"Gibberish" in a text message is caused by a variety of things, including (but not limited to):

~ the sender adding smileys, emoticons or other "special" characters
~ the sender including a signature
~ formatting (font, color,etc) not being interpreted by the receiving phone
~ texts longer than 160 characters
