Do I need the Set Top box if the app works?

My understanding is that my plan requires me to have a set top box (correct me if I’m wrong)

However, I always watch live TV on the Fios TV app on Apple TV, which works fine.

Am I required to keep the set top box hooked up and plugged in so that I can keep using the App? Or, can I simply unplug and unhook it, and store it on the side? Seems unnecessary at this point.

I know you have to pay for at least one Fios box to get any video service. I'm not sure if you actually have to have it hooked up to simply stream. I'd say try it and see what happens if the box is unhooked.
