iPhone 16

Verizon is misleading in their quest for profit. They have saddled me with an iPhone 16 (P.O.S.) that overheats and constantly shuts down due to overheating. My Samsung employer issued phone works flawlessly but yet this iPhone 16 cannot. I have been to the Apple Store here in Phoenix Arizona. They wanted to reset my phone which erases all my information, I did not agree but allowed them to update phone which did not and does not fix the problem. They will not accept the responsibility of being honest and fixing the hardware and not the software which is the problem.

There is no help from Verizon or Apple. Take your phone back!!!!!!

While I've heard of phones overheating for assorted reasons over the years, iPhone 16s don't have a generalized problem with doing this, because otherwise the forums would be exploding with posts about it. Other than checking that your software is up to date (I think there was a software issue some months ago which did cause some iPhones to get hot, but another update fixed that), other causes of overheating include:

lots of background app usage
having a bunch of demanding apps open all the time simultaneously (such as games, streaming services, video editors)
insufficient storage space on phone

Steps to Fix Overheating

1) Force Restart Your iPhone: This can resolve minor software glitches by refreshing the system.

2) Close Apps and Reduce Usage: Close all unnecessary apps from the App Switcher. Avoid using the camera, video editing, or other resource-intensive apps.

3) Update Your Software: Make sure your iPhone is running the latest iOS and that all your apps are updated, as updates often include bug fixes and performance improvements.

4) Manage Location Services: Turn off Location Services or set app permissions to "Never" for apps that don't need constant GPS access.

5) Free Up Storage: Ensure you have sufficient storage by deleting unused apps, photos, and videos.

6) Disable Background App Refresh: Turn off this feature for apps that don't need to refresh data constantly.

7) Improve Ventilation: Remove your phone case, especially if it's thick, to allow the device to cool more effectively.

8. Adjust Screen Settings: Reduce screen brightness and enable auto-brightness.

9) Check for a Wi-Fi Signal: If you're not on Wi-Fi, connect to it or find a place with a better cellular signal to reduce strain. (Note from me: This applies only if your cellular signal strength is weak, as in you only have one bar showing regularly or field test mode says your signal strength is somewhere around -115 dBm or worse.)

10) Monitor Apple Intelligence: If your phone is updated to iOS 18 and has Apple Intelligence, it might be a new source of battery drain and overheating, so you can try disabling it.

When to Contact Apple Support:
If your iPhone overheats and displays a message telling it to cool down before you can use it again, or if it shuts down completely, this can indicate a hardware problem. In this case, you should contact Apple Support for further assistance. (Note from me: if your phone is still under warranty and it's doing this, I'd file a warranty claim for a replacement.)
