If my wife sends me an SMS message it's blocked but iMessages go through fine. How to fix on my end?

If my wife sends me a text, she receives this message: you have been blocked from originating messages to [my number]. If she sends me a message via iMessage it comes through fine. Obviously I have not blocked my wife's messages. And, I am sure I am missing messages from other people and companies which is a huge issue. This is a brand new iPhone 17Pro. How can I fix this on my end?

I would be concerned too if I were having issues with receiving text messages. The first thing to check is to make sure you don't have any blocks set up. The link below shows you how to check that from your My Verizon app.

If your wife is using some other texting app on her iPhone (you mentioned she sometimes uses iMessage, so I'm guessing both of you are iPhone users) - my guess is the other texting app is using RCS or some other encrypted format and either you or your wife's iPhone wasn't set up to use RCS or one/both phones have the RCS stuck on "waiting to activate" so not working with RCS texts. Another rarer cause is if there is an RCS block on your line or maybe even your account.

P.S. - If your iPhone is brand new, did you check that SMS is enabled? If you aren't getting short code texts, then your SMS wasn't turned on.

She is simply sending text messages from her phone to mine. Her message settings are "send at text message" toggled as yes. It is sent to me via iMessage but my auto-reply to her is "text message SMS" and blocked. Then she tries again and it goes through fine.

There are no blocks on either of our phones.

I have a new iPhone 17Pro and had to set up all my apps again because nothing ported over correctly. I lost contacts, basic settings, all of my apps, etc. It has not been a good experience.

My wife is simply sending regular text messages from her phone to mine. Her message settings are "send at text message" toggled as yes. It is sent to me via iMessage but my auto-reply to her is "text message SMS" and has blocked her outgoing iMessage to me. Then she tries again and it goes through fine. We are pretty sure I am missing other text messages which would allow me to sign back into some of my apps which are necessary for work.

Are you connected to Wi-Fi right now? If you turn Wi-Fi off, does it show a cellular connection? Are you able to call, text and use data with Wi-Fi turned off?
