Bought a portable hotspot while in Japan

I was having internet connection (did not buy an eSIM and relying on the “free WiFi” all around. That was a pain. So I noticed on Verizon you can buy a monthly charge for a portable hotspot. The problem is I don’t know how to use this portable hotspot and is this a good replacement for an eSIM

A mobile hotspot device requires a service plan of its own from a carrier to work. If you are currently in Japan, contact one of the mobile carriers there to inquire about a service plan for your hotspot. If you are wanting to use the Japanese hotspot on Verizon, you'd need to run the IMEI of the hotspot on the BYOD compatibility checker to see if it'll work:
