I knew I needed to update my phone when..

…the modem went out on my VoIP line one night and I ended up having to go to the office building a few blocks away from my apartment while carrying my landline phone to find a phone jack to plug it into. And it turned out none of the phone jacks in the building worked, except the one which the printer was hooked up to. Yeah, I literally crawled around everywhere trying them all! Then when I called my ISP to report the outage, the robo-voice said, "Is this account the one for the printer" or something similar…

I can't remember what else happened, but later in the night I had to call my ISP again…which meant I had to walk back out to the office building with the landline phone again and unplug the printer once more to deal with the robo-voice again… The very next day, I got my first cell phone!

-Family member #1 has a phone from a manufacturer who quit making cell phones a few years ago and still uses it. Also lost said phone overseas a couple years ago and paid hundreds of dollars to get it back! "Why don't you get a new phone?" "Nah."

-Family member #2 dropped his several years' old phone and the screen shattered. Looks worse than the "wrecks" shown in old Verizon trade-in ads and he's still using it (also won't pay to replace the screen either). Probably waiting for the screen to completely fall off and the phone to die before he gives it up. "Why don't you get a new one? They have several newer generations out now." "Nah."

-Family member #3 has an iPhone! Her cat used to have an Apple AirTag because she was afraid of the cat running off due to it being a rescued stray. The AirTag went AWOL and her iPhone's software can't be updated to support the AirTag because the phone is that old. So the AirTag remains missing to this day. But the cat developed separation anxiety. "Why don't you get a new o-" "Nah!"

Good for you. A service engineer at my workplace did the same thing with her phone several years ago and then we all got treated to her trying to disinfect and dry out the phone on a countertop. 🤢 Granted, it was a work phone, but still…
