If I port a number as an eSim (new Verizon line), can I then cancel my original line?

My Pixel 7 uses a physical Verizon SIM card, but I wish to ditch the card and the associated number. The "cell number" that I want to use for everything is a VOIP # assigned to me by "Google Voice". It seems likely that Verizon can port my GV number as an eSIM ... but I don't want to pay two line charges and I only want my preferred phone number.

Once the GV number is ported to the eSIM, can I remove the physical SIM card and cancel the associated Verizon line for that? Would my user name for login at verizon.com then be the number that I had ported in?

How should I time the port-in so there's minimal service interruption and minimum overlap for the two line charges?

The Pixel 7 supports dual SIM (one physical SIM card, and one eSIM), so it's possible to have both numbers on the same phone at once.

Are you prepaid, or postpaid? If you are prepaid, then you can either:

1) Let your service plan expire on your current line and then port the Google Voice number in on your Pixel 7. However, this would mean you'd be getting a completely new prepaid account and would have to re-register on My Verizon with the new number as if you'd never been a customer.

2) Add a 2nd line to your current account and then disconnect the original number before the service plan on the original line expires. Since all prepaid service is paid upfront, I'd time it so the second number is ported in near line 1's expiration date so there isn't too much of an overlap with the billing. This way, you'd keep your current My Verizon account, and just have a different phone number.

If you are postpaid, it's easiest to have the 2nd number ported into your existing account as a 2nd line. There will be a line activation fee of $40 for the 2nd line. Whether or not you pay for a partial month of service on the 2nd line - because say, you port the 2nd line in with one week left to go on your current billing cycle so then you'd pay for 1 week on the 2nd line - or if you get billed for a month of service for "month 1" on the 2nd line, I can't say. I've read elsewhere in the forums and also from my own experience being postpaid elsewhere, when I ported in with them, they billed me for a whole month when I started, even though I started at the end of a month. Then the next month was the next billing cycle. You'd have to check with a Verizon agent on this. I want to say if you disconnect line 1 on a partial month, your last bill will be for the partial month, as that was my experience elsewhere. However, I'm a prepaid Verizon customer, so this is another thing to verify with Verizon. I would also ask about the Account Owner status, as your existing line is the Account Owner's. Adding a 2nd line may mean you get locked out of My Verizon if you disconnect line 1.
