Rebooting after update

Issue with update, it has been reported on various Android forums.

My phone has not rebooted since the update was applied. This includes areas where my signal isn't the greatest too. I will watch out for it.

Since I updated today, I have had a shutdown and 2 random reboots.

Any ideas on how to resolve this?

2 options: 1) call verizon, get a replacement sent and don't update it or 2) revert back to an older radio version. The latter method isn't trivial though and we can't talk about it here.

I'm in Huntsville, AL and since the update have had 4 arbitrary reboots, two in the middle of calls. Have full 3G coverage in my area. My brother in Nashville has the Thunderbolt as well, has been rebooting for him as well.

It's odd that some seem to be affected while others are not. I'm in the not category so far. Since updating yesterday morning, I've been in very poor to no signal areas between home and work, yet the phone has operated normally since it booted up after the update. I wonder if it has anything to do with any third party apps downloaded/installed or particular stock apps being used or how they're configured? My TB is stock all the way, with only a few stock apps updated (ex. Adobe Reader, Flash Player, Google Maps, Gmail). I also don't use any of the social networking apps, just the aforementioned ones. Also, could it be something with what cell towers it hits related to the tower configuration? Or are there just a bad batch of these phones out there? These smart phones are so much like computers, complex in nature and so many variables that can cause problems. In troubleshooting, it's a process of elimination which can be difficult and time consuming. :smileysad:

Funny you say it's odd that some dont have issues. Two days ago a friend of mine came over and I saw he got a TB so I asked how he liked it. He "said it's great I love it". I said " really cause I want to smash mine with hammer on the counter at a Verizon store". He was baffled as to why I was so upset with my TB so I explained the problems I was having and while I had his phone in my hand I touched the browser icon, the phone did some thinking, and came back with a no connection error. He say " yeah it does that sometimes". I just laughed cause he is one of those that thinks it's great but didn't realize the no connection issue is a common problem. So I think that there are a good percentage of TB owners out there that just deal with it.

many really don't have issues. i have none (other than the gps and sound while recording....that we know everyone has). have yet to get a connectivity problem and not one dropped call, whereas my friend in chicago has 3-5 dropped calls every day????

YES...I'm having the same random reboot problem since I downloaded the new software update. And to the best of my knowledge, my phone NEVER did a random reboot prior to downloading the new software.

This situation is a real pain in the butt...especially if I am in the middle of a phone call, or writing an email or sending a text.

I performed a hard reset on my phone to see if that will stop this random rebooting, but it's only been a few minutes since I did it, so it's too soon to tell if it did anything.

I'll report more as I know more.

I purchased my phone on 5/9/2011 and I never had a problem with the thing rebooting. After I received the update my phone was rebooting at least two or three times in a hour. I took the phone back to the Verizon store yesterday and they reset it back to factory settings. I was told to from customer service if the phone continues to reboot after 24 hours to bring the phone back and they would give me a new phone. So far I had one reboot. Within that 24 hour window. I figured I would just wait it out over the weekend to see what happens.

Sorry to hear that guys. I have the phone since day one and it has been working fine before and after the update. I did a factory reset after the upgrade, and this is me, I always do this after any software upgrade. Hope a solution is found for everyone else having problems.

Wow what a horrilbe phone roll out by Verizon. How can you release an update the seemily doesn't really improve anything? No one is reporting better batter life or performance. Plus now we or atleast some of us or having our phones reboot when everything was working fine before. That's just silly. I dont care if my towers arent updated dont roll out the phone update until all of the towers are updated. I came to Verizon for great coverage and quality phones and service, but am left with a gimpy 4G phone I have to run in 3G just to get through the day and now randomly reboots. So glad I decided to pay the premiums and switch.

Get on you game Verizon and fix this crap or extend the 4G hotspot promo until all this stuff is fixed.

With all the issues reported after the update, no one has yet decided to hard reset and see if problems get resolved.... After 2.2 update on Droid X a number of fixes did not take until after a hard reset.

A hard reset should be a must when doing a major update or bug fix. And the level of items update needed to fix I would say this update would be major.

Since I am within my 14 days I will be at the Verizon store first thing Monday morning to get a replacement phone and I will not be updating it. I must also add that this tower theory is as silly as paying for someone to cut my wrists and hang me at the same time. People paid for something that seems to not work.

If I seem a little ticked off it's because I am on a Verizon forum and it seems that they are looking the other way on this problem. I have been on other forums with posts about random rebooting of the "Great HTC Thunderbolt 4G LTE".

I guess you don't understand the theory at all and all the test data which was presented. I have seen the data and with recent events I would assume the tower theory is more plausible than what a lot of people crying about.

I will try and make it easier for you to understand what the theory is. Since it DOES NOT affect every Thunderbolt with the update(if it was the software ALL Thunderbolts would be affected) it has to be hardware on the phone OR towers. The evidence gathered so far shows that people that are affected are from certain towers. For example Hawaii has 1 4G tower and a slew of 3G towers all with the same maker. Our local forums shows no signs of reboots, and XDA some people have shown their location here in Hawaii and they didn't have problems. Yet like in your area your towers are a different maker, and you have random reboots.

Yes things should work as intended and what you are paying for, but you can't honestly blame everything solely on Verizon. Connecting and maintaining a network is completely different than owning a car... Early adopters will always run into problems. Just look at all the other carriers when they rolled out networks themselves. Look at the first iPhone, or even the G1. It happens... If you want a more stable network then it's always best to wait it out before moving to it.

Since yesterday when I downloaded the update, my phone has rebooted six (6) times, including once in the middle of a phone call. I call customer support and they acted like they never heard of the problem. The one thing they suppested was removing the battery, I tried it and so far it has not rebooted but only time will tell.

I have had 2 reboots today, both times when I was using a program that requires GPS. My 3G connection also seems to have become unstable, only good news is battery life seems better.

I updated my thunderbolt and in the 36hrs since, i have "noticed" it rebooting itself 3 times. It did not do this before the update!.

As for the cell tower theory, it would be a bug on the phone anyway. The phone should not, and let me repeat myself, the phone should not reboot itself if the cell tower is not updated. I am not saying that isn't the a factor, but the phone software should be able to handle the situation of an tower software not being updated without rebooting itself.

If the battery needs to be taken out for this update to work then as some have stated, then Verizon needs to better inform users of that fact.

Get your act together Verizon! Your looking a bit third class.

I went to Verizon today to moan and groan about the phone and they knew what problem I had. When I talked to the customer service rep. and I said Thunderbolt he knew the problem I was having.

In a nut shell..........He talked to customer service while I was waiting and was told that HTC was working on the problem.

That's all I have.... But its better than nothing.

I am one of "those" that did not know there was a problem. I got the Thunderbolt for my first droid experience. I really did not know I ever had a problem except for the weather widget never knowing where I was. That was the only gripe I really had. Two weeks ago it started working better (I did not change locations while I slept). Got the update over the weekend and now I am back in a "home" location 150 miles from the real home.

I was in Savannah GA over the weekend when I updated the software so I did it via 3G and I noticed it rebooted 3 times. After I came back to Atlanta I did a couple of things and not sure if either of those helped but I havent had a reboot since sunday. 1) I turned off the phone, not restarted it, but I turned off the phone for 10 minutes and took the battery out. 2) I had the "fast reboot" option checked on my phone since I bought it, I unchecked that too just for kicks. So in the last 48 hours I have not had a reboot, not sure if it's that I am on 4G now that I am back in Atlanta or the fact I did a hard reset for 10 minutes or the fact I unchecked the "fast reboot" option from the settings menu.

My GPS works better now, I get more battery life (although I was able to buy the extended battery anyway so it doesn't really matter to me now) the video issue is solved, that's a big plus for me, I hated how you could barely hear anything when making a video before the update. I hope this helps someone and good luck.

I have to chime in here as well... I had the random turning off thing occuring after the update as well, and gps didn't seem to work at all. I took out the battery and sim for a few minutes and restarted, it seemed to fix it, at least for a while. That was back on Friday. Since then, my GPS works great - really quick lock like under 5 secs, but I have had one random reboot. I'm not too worried about that as all the android devices I've had would do this from time to time, and I think my iPhone did it too periodically. If it happens again soon I'll do a factory reset, if it happens after that back to the store for a fight. Dunno if I want to keep this thing if it stays unstable.

I must say after the update data seems to be more stable, I'm not having to toggle airplane mode from time to time to get it to work, and streaming while tethering seems to be stable with hulu.

I experienced my first unexpected reboot today. It was in the car not far from home in a known very poor signal area I drive through almost every day. Heck, even FM radio is spotty in this low lying area with a ton of trees. It's almost like an RF radio dead zone. Anyway, normally I don't use my phone while driving, instead keep it in the holster on my belt loop. This time, I was curious to do some testing and while driving through this area, I launched the weather app, which is set to update on launch and every 3 hours (the default setting). At the same time, I saw the signal strength disappear and the weather app got stuck on "Updating". Shortly thereafter, it came up with a connection error asking to cancel or retry. During this time, the 3G indicator never went away. I hit retry two times and then on the third, BOOM, the phone rebooted. I've tried doing this at work when the phone indicates low or no signal, but it has never rebooted. At worst, it would time out and prompt to cancel or retry and once the signal strength came back up, all was good.

On a side note, since the update, I have noticed Google Maps update a lot quicker and the phone stays locked on 3G much better (no 4G LTE in my area yet and haven't been to one since the update).

Getting reboots here too. 3,4,5 or so per day. Stopped by Verizon to log my complaint. Service rep hadn't heard of the problem. (surprise)

Patiently waiting for HTC and Big Red to get this sorted out, but still frustrated. Ugh.

I got a new phone replacement and its working without the update but I agree with u shakedown. Also why put out another new 4g phone if u can't make the first one the best it can be? Love the charge commercial about how its the first 4g that works or something like that.

Everything was fine before the update. Once I did the updated I started having random reboots. I called Verizon and I already reset my phone twice but I am still having the problem. Sometimes is once or twice a day, sometimes is more. It had happened without using the phone and while using the phone. So far there is no pattern of what could be causing it. This is very frustrating! Verizon should be able to provide a way or a temporary release to take the phone back the way it was before the update until they can find the root cause and provide with a fixed update.

I have the update installed and was having reboots. I disabled all location services (VZW, Google, GPS) and haven't had a reboot since. Give it a shot and see if it works for you...

Just called customer support, to funny the tech and his manager where unaware of any issues with shut downs and reboots happening with latest updates. Told them they should check there forums. Large problem. Needs to be addressed.

There is no question , this is definatley happening after the update. The phone was perfect (except the battery life) for months.

I've been experiecing 2-4 reboots a day, at least the ones I've noticed.

The most frustating reboot, was during a voice call. Phone just rebooted in the middle of the call.

We need this bug fixed.

for the record, i will pass on that "fix" as well, and would suggest to any of you that are not having the reboot problem, to do the same. wait a week or so and see if it fixes anything before you download it. hopefully it will help and hopefully it will come sooner rather than later.

I am convinced it is not the phone causing the random reboots. I have had the phone since release date and minus the inconsistent 4G LTE connectivity, the phone has been flawless (Also minus the subpar battery life). I go on vacation to Hawaii and just yesterday the phone rebooted randomly 7-10 times throughout the day. Sometimes I'd be using it, sometimes not. I'll be able to verify this when I return home to Orange County, Ca (Where I have never had a random reboot) in a couple of days.

With this kind of instability, an iPhone is looking a lot more desirable.

It's amazing such a {word filter avoidance} update was released. My Thunderbolt reboots MANY times a day. I'm so **bleep** I'm thinking of demanding a new phone or switching carriers altogether. Been with Verizon for 10+ years. My local store suggested a factory reset. I wasn't thrilled with the idea but did it anyway. No resolution...SOS. Talk to us Verizon. When will this be resolved!

This is a **bleep** shame that we, as consumers, have to wait for a "fix" to fix the crap that they pushed out! That's unacceptable!! I let a crappy carrier for Big Red and this is the thanks I get? For being one of the 1st 4G LTE devices out and this is how we get treated? Granted that HTC is aware of the issue, I've read so many times that it's on Verizon to release the update and I'm unsure who to believe now. All I know is that I'm **bleep** that we can't get a "band-aid" for someone elses screw up and an OS update as well.

In what way is this post a solution to the problem? If my response to bill inquiries from Verizon was "At this time we do not have a specific date that your payment will be available", would I still have service?

Went to Wilmington this past weekend and didn't have a reboot all weekend which was a first for that area. Running the leaked "MR 2.5" radio and GB 2.3.4 so it looks like they're making progress.

Well I let my guard down and listened to someone at my local company store over the weekend and was told all the bugs have been ironed out and it was ok to download the latest firmwere

Actually he's talking about Verizon getting rid of unlimited data for 29.99 a month. if you have it already you're grandfathered into it but anybody that wants to get a smartphone with unlimited data will no longer be able to get it. starting in july sometime.

I specifically stayed stock because I use my phone a great deal and

Sadly, Verizon and HTC are either staffed with monkeys and other primates

or more likely, just doesn't care because there are no consequences when

your one of only 3 carriers nation-wide and have an effectively locked in user base.

i'd say you were MUCH more polite than most customers. absolutely no need for any apology. they need to get this fixed and they need to do it last month.

Hahaha ok. But seriously, this needs to get fixed. When it gets in the way of work flow then it becomes an Issue. :smileyindifferent: and as of yesterday, rebooting two times in a row while in mid convo...big issue for me.

Our product team and HTC did want to fully test the new software to make sure this issue was resolved and no new issues arose. The software update is now available and being pushed out in stages. Normally this process can take about a week to go through. You will receive a message that the software update is available.
