I'm writing this for a friend since we cannot find the answer. How do you turn off the 3G on the Droid X? We figured it will help on the battery life like it does on my Eris. Thanks.
I understand where you are coming from but the app that I suggested will give the best of both worlds because it does allow you to allow only required apps when it is needed.... I see that we both have different views on how to accomplish this. Both can work it just depends on what the OP wants.
go into airplane mode
Two utilities you can try, and both are in the market.
Quick Settings: App to toggle some basic settings, including data network. Accessible from the notification bar. Configurable. Infrequently updated. Audio settings a little buggy. Free.
Extended Controls: Widgets which do the same, including notification bar accessiblity. Look, feel and config highly customizable. Costs a few $ and uses home screen space.
I've used both, but like the granier control I get from the Extended Controls widgets.
Data connectivity types can be changed depending on the type of data network you're on.
Best,
Mike
Is that the only option? If I'm correct, in airplane mode, you cannot recv or make calls. On my Eris, you can turn off the 3G and still keep using phone as is except for internet service & maybe for some aps. Shall we assume 3G cannot be turned off on this model phone? I would be really suprised that there is no other option other than airplane mode. Thx
Sorry Mike, did not see your response. I will tell my friend about that. Thx
on your eris when you turn off 3g can you make calls/use internet or just use it for games/music/pics/etc, like the dx in airplane mode??
do you really think there's a mode that turns off 3g, to save the batt, but everything still works?
JuiceDefender Ultimate works best for me... It allows you to place a widget on desktop to toggle off wifi and data transmission all together until toggled back on...

why have a separate app to do it when there's one there.
i drag it to the desktop like i do gps and wx.
Tap on the menu key (bottom left corner). Tap on Settings>Location and Security Settings. Next, click on the boxes next to both "Use GPS satellites" and "Enable Assisted GPS" if the check marks are a bright green. If they are a dull grey they are not on.
As for widgets, just tap and hold your finger on a blank spot on one of the screens until a pop up menu appears. Tap on widgets and then scroll down until you come to "GPS toggle". Tap on that, and you will have an on/off switch for your GPS.
The user just wants to disable data and only when they don't need it, there isn't a way to disable data off and on easily,
1. If you use airplane mode this turns off radio to receive calls as well
2. If you disable data through settings the data is off until you go through the process to turn it back on.
Plus juice defender you can prioritize apps access to the data and when and this way the needed apps like email can still access data to retrieve emails but other apps that isn't a high priority are restricted from data except when you allow it. I have noticed a nice amount of improvement of my battery life since installing.
I set mine to allow me to drop status bar and click to activate and disable...
when did the op want to do anything but extend batt life by turning off 3g?
where did op say "disable data", that's what you offered the the app several posts back.
Another option that you may consider is the Battery Manager under the setting menu. You can customize how long the 3G stays on after you lock your phone.
Menu-->Settings-->Battery Manager-->Battery Mode--> Here you can pick one of 3 pre-defined profiles or use the custom battery saver profile.
Best of Luck!
Wildman, my friend does not want to pay for an app if there really is no need to. I appreciate the information from everyone on this thread. Will give info to my friend & bearone21, no problem; glad it's understood. Take care
You may also want to check out the app called 'dataswitch'
Here is the link for it on appbrain, then you can read about it and see if it's what you are looking for.
